Wednesday selections
GOLDWORK - 18:22 Epsom
He was back to form at Newmarket last time and GOLDWORK looks ready to resume winning ways.
Switched back to a sprint trip, he finished third behind Sea Cookie at Newmarket, faring by far the best of those who raced on the far side. He was rallying at the finish too, has form on downhill tracks and races from an unchanged mark.
POST RIDER - 20:18 Bath
Recent course-and-distance winner Swiped will be popular in this, but it might be worth chancing POST RIDER against him.
The selection is dropping down into Class 5 company for the first time since winning at Newmarket in October, races from a reduced mark which allows her to slot into this 0-75 from the ceiling rating. She’ll go to the front, and shaped as if she was on the way back in an amateur riders’ race at Goodwood last time.
Thursday selections
EMPIRICAL – 16:05 Nottingham (NAP)
EMPIRICAL looks to have excellent claims in the Watch Racing TV Now Handicap over a mile at Nottingham on Wednesday and he gets the Nap vote. The son of Kingman was slowly away over the course and distance last time but made eyecatching late headway off an average gallop for third and races off the same mark here. Trainer Ed Walker has an excellent record at Nottingham in the months of June/July (32% strike-rate) and this is his sole runner on the card.
GUNNERY SERGEANT – 15:18 Perth
Gordon Elliott farms races like the Secure Air Parks Edinburgh Airport Parking Handicap Chase at Perth in the summer and this looks a good opportunity for GUNNER SERGEANT. The six-year-old is a relative whipper snapper amongst most of this lot and after just two starts over fences in Ireland he’ll likely enjoy this much easier assignment under Sean Bowen.
SPORTY SOCKS – 16:50 Yarmouth
You’ve got to watch out for William Stone’s three-year-olds at Yarmouth when taking on their elders at this time of year and his filly SPORTY SOCKS fits the bill very nicely in the Mark Sumner Handicap over a mile. Stone is four from nine with his 3yos against their elders in handicaps at Yarmouth in the month of July and this filly is the only 3yo in the field getting the 9lb weight-for-age. The drop back to a mile from 10 furlongs also looks a smart move and she probably needed her run after six months off here last time when racing up with the strong pace throughout. Keep an eye out for any fancy early prices.
GOLD STAR GAZING – 17:33 Kempton
GOLD STAR GAZING can improve on everything he’s done in division two of the Unibet Supporting Safer Gambling Novice Stakes at Kempton. The son of Starman has been gelded since last seen and that combined with the return to seven furlongs at Kempton can help him get his head in front of chief rival Korbut.
FANCIULLA DEL WEST – 18:15 Newbury
It could be a good day for Ed Walker and his FANCIULLA DEL WEST is fancied to round off the day nicely in the Sequoia Hair & Beauty Group Handicap at Newbury over 10 furlongs. The Lope Y Fernandez filly shaped nicely on handicap debut at Redcar last time out, finishing second and pulling clear of the rest, and from a family of winners it looks a matter of time before she adds her name to the list.
