LAKERS – 14:35 Goodwood (NAP)
LAKERS looks to have plenty going for him in the sprint handicap at Goodwood. The Amo-owned four-year-old has a decent record when fresh from a break and he’s got some nice form on an easy surface during his time with previous trainer George Boughey. A winner for his new yard at Southwell last October, he’s still rated 6lb higher now but showed up really well when third off an even higher mark at Lingfield in February. He’s had excuses in two subsequent starts and looks to be resuming at a good time with the Kevin Philippart de Foy runners among the winners of late.
ON THE RIVER – 15:20 Beverley
Harriet Bethell’s ON THE RIVER is expected to enjoy the conditions at Beverley and the way he stayed on from an unpromising position to take third – beaten just half a length in the end – over the bare mile at Newcastle last month strongly suggests his turn is fast approaching. Currently on an official mark of 78, his last four victories have come in handicaps when rated 80 on each occasion and you really rely on the horse to run his race in this Class 4 company. Another big run looks assured from the seven-year-old.
MOONJID – 15:25 Yarmouth
His strike-rate isn’t outstanding by any means but MOONJID is fully effective at this sort of level and he’s worth siding with as cheekpieces go back on. Mick Appleby’s charge is only a couple of pounds higher in the weights than when winning over this course and distance in June this year and, following a couple of low-key efforts at Windsor and Pontefract, I thought he ran a touch better than the bare form suggests when staying on for fourth on quick ground at Doncaster earlier this month. A slightly easier surface here should play more to his strengths.
