John Berry can’t do a lot wrong at present, with form figures for his last six runners reading 112323, and he’s clearly got his string in good order. That gives plenty of hope that DEREHAM will be ready to rock first time up after his winter break, and as a first-time up winner back in 2022 after a similar absence to today’s, that only increases confidence.

Dereham is better known for his turf exploits but has a good effort to his name over this C&D when third to Ray’s The One in this very race last year. He meets that opponent on slightly worse terms today but whereas last year’s race was a small-field affair that Ray’s The One was able to dominate from the outset, he’s going to have his work cut out to do the same in this 13-runner contest, with several other runners that like to go forward, and I’d expect the form to be reversed this time around.

Silvestre De Sousa, who has a strike rate of 33% for the yard (5-15) takes the ride, and he can get his head back in front again.

WADACRE GOMEZ has an excellent record over C&D, winning three from four in handicaps and being placed on the other occasion. He’s had excuses for both runs since an excellent fourth at Lingfield in March, being ridden against type there two starts back and far from disgraced on a rare turf start at Chester last time.

Wadacre Gomez has shown his best form when making the running, which he hasn’t done on recent starts, but he’s drawn to attack in stall one here, and has every chance of making all under the excellent Billy Loughnane. His form was progressive throughout the winter and it would be dangerous to assume that his improvement has levelled out based on his last two efforts.

Tonight’s rider was in the plate when he won at Wolverhampton in February, and I would consider him a better rider these days than the veteran Franny Norton, who has been on board the last twice.

The Chelsea Banham-trained Sergeants Legacy showed a bit of ability on his first three starts whilst getting his mark but left that form behind when a half-length second to Mbappe at Kempton on his handicap debut over this trip, only just denied victory in the shadow of the post after being on the front end throughout.

That form is working out well, with the third Blenheim Star winning easily at Ripon and Brighton since (when we were with her) and fourth home Hatadora was successful at Windsor, making Sergeants Legacy’s mark of 58 tonight look on the lenient side.

He’s been gelded since his last outing too, and all in all a good run looks on the cards, with trip, track and draw all in his favour.
