15:00 Newcastle
You can make each-way cases for plenty of these in what appears to be an open-looking contest, but the selection is TYRRHENIAN SEA, who has a very solid record at Newcastle of 11123, and if you narrow that down to today’s trip of a mile, he’s unbeaten in three starts here.
He comes here off the back of an excellent effort when second to the odds-on Chancellor in the Listed Tandridge Stakes at Southwell, the first two pulling well clear of the rest, and that was a run that was right up there with the best of his form on the figures. Despite that, the handicapper has seen fit to drop him 2lb for it when raising him might have seemed the easier option, making him look nicely treated here. His nearside rail pitch means some luck will be required to get through with his hold-up style, but they tend to fan out across the track in these big-field events and it shouldn’t be a problem. Roger Varian continues in great form, and there’s plenty of positives to Tyrrhenian Sea’s chances today.
15:35 Newcastle
Pocklington was going to be the original suggestion here, given he barely knows how to run a bad race on the all-weather and comes here in top form after running The Caltonian to ¾l over C&D last time out, but over 6f here the best draw and run style to have appears to be low and go forward, so we concentrated on that instead. Once we did, it didn’t take us long to find the improving SARAB STAR, who has been front-running over 7f this winter but ought not mind the drop back to six. He and Mount Athos dominated the contest at Kempton last time, the former just coming out on top, but that represented another step forward, and with trainer Jack Channon off to a flying start at the weekend, we’re hoping he pops out from stall 1 and doesn’t see another horse here.
Bragbor has never been out of the frame in six starts at Newcastle and looked the obvious enough start point for this, but with Richard & Peter Fahey’s horses seemingly in need of their first runs of the season, maybe Bragbor is best watched after a 127-day break today. (Update here - having written this, they opened up with a double at Southwell last night, making Bragbor more interesting still.)
Instead the bet is PARLANDO, who, bar the one disappointing effort on the snow and ice at St Moritz two starts ago, has been in good form this winter, winning twice at Chelmsford and Wolverhampton, and last time out doing nothing wrong when third to course specialist Whitcombe Rockstar at Kempton, staying on in good fashion all the way up the straight. That was at 12f, and this drop back to a strongly-run 10f, which this promises to be, will suit him even better. His form here at Newcastle reads 32242, so all in all, he looks cracking each-way value.
