David Massey looks at the value in the away meetings from the final day of Royal Ascot on Saturday.
Racing betting tips: Saturday June 20
1pt win Pay Attention in the 13:24 Newmarket at 13/2 (Unibet, min 6/1)
1pt win Poppeye in the 17:18 Redcar at 11/1 (General, min 10/1)
1pt win Walson’s Law in the 19:30 Doncaster at 8/1 (General, min 7-1)
13:24 Newmarket
PAY ATTENTION looks ready to win again. He found his winning form in early June last year and after a couple of runs this season appears ready to strike again, the refitted tongue-tie and visor working the oracle at Newbury last time after they were missing first time out at Bath, He was a good second in a similar class of apprentices handicap at Newbury and pilot Oliver Carmichael is able to claim his 5lb off here. Plenty in his favour, and he’s on a winning mark.
17:18 Redcar
The one that catches the eye here is POPPEYE, who David saw on debut at Southwell and this strong sort went in the notebook after an eyecatching run over a mile and a half that saw him trade very short in the run after looking threatening, but ultimately running out of steam to finish a nine-length fourth. He had attracted pre-race money too so that was not unexpected, and it suggested he had some ability.
A poor run at Ripon on softer ground followed, but it was better at Redcar last time, still looking for from the finished article, and an opening mark of 62 looks workable.
Trainer Grant Tuer knows the family well, and half-brother Termonator, also trained by Tuer, won on handicap debut, and half-sister Real Terms (Tuer again) was beaten less than a length on hers. This is a big drop in trip but there’s every chance it will suit, based on what we’ve seen so far.
19:30 Doncaster
As I am the forgiving type I’m going to concentrate on what WALSON'S LAW did first time up this year and ignore his Goodwood run last time where nothing much went right for him, and he was left poorly placed in a race where the first two were on the speed throughout.
A winner over both 7f and a mile last year, he shaped as though he had retained all of his ability when third over 6f at Ascot the time before, that coming over a trip too short and in a better class race than this. I’d rather take that as a guide to what he ought to be capable of here rather than Goodwood, and if he can build on that, he’d have a good chance here.
