WTA Tour: Heather Watson beats third seed Anett Kontaveit in Luxembourg Open

Heather Watson claimed a hard-fought straight-sets victory over third seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the Luxembourg Open.

The British number two completed the first set with a stunning forehand winner in 35 minutes and began the second on the front foot as she broke the Estonian world number 35 against serve to take the lead.

Kontaveit hit back to level the scores at 3-3 before Watson - ranked 38 places below her opponent - found her inner strength to battle ahead and served out the match to record a 6-4 6-4 win in one hour and 23 minutes.

A quarter-final clash against Elise Mertens awaits after the fifth-seeded Belgian saw off American Madison Brengle.

Meanwhile, Naomi Broady saved two match points and won 10 of the last 13 games to beat former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki.

Broady looked to be heading out when she trailed by a set and 3-5 in their second-round encounter, with Lisicki twice bringing up match point on the British number three's serve.

But Broady, who lost in the final round of qualifying but was given a lucky loser spot, dug deep to hold and then broke the Lisicki serve twice in succession to level the match.

She extended her run of games to seven to lead 3-0 in the decider and did not let her advantage slip, winning 4-6 7-5 6-3 to reach her first WTA Tour quarter-final since February 2016.

Lisicki is not the player she was having slipped to 262 in the world rankings following injury but this was still a terrific win for Broady, who next faces Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig.

Watson and Broady will meet in the semis if they both win on Thursday.

Top seed Kristina Mladenovic lost a 10th match in a row at the Kremlin Cup.

The Frenchwoman was one of the stand-out players of the first half of the season but has slumped spectacularly during the final months of the campaign.

Mladenovic has failed to win a match since a first-round victory over Tatjana Maria in Washington on July 31, with her latest loss a 6-2 2-6 6-2 defeat by Aliaksandra Sasnovich in Moscow.

It was a dreadful day for the favourites, with the top four seeds all going out.

Second seed Coco Vandeweghe lost 7-5 1-6 6-2 to Lesia Tsurenko, number three Elena Vesnina was beaten 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 by Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Irina-Camelia Begu beat fourth seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-4 6-3.

Magdalena Rybarikova defeated Maria Sharapova in the first round but only lasted a set of her second-round clash with Alize Cornet before retiring injured, while sixth seed Daria Gavrilova also pulled out.

Julia Goerges was the sole seed to survive, the seventh seed beating Yulia Putintseva 6-3 6-3.
