Michael Monaghan takes role with Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield Trinity have named Michael Monaghan as their assistant coach ahead of the new Super League season.

The 37-year-old Australian enjoyed a successful playing career in the NRL with home club Canberra Raiders and Manly Sea Eagles before making the switch to Warrington Wolves in 2008.

Monaghan retired in 2014 and had a spell as assistant coach at Catalans Dragons but will now take up a similar role under head coach Chris Chester at Belle Vue.

"When the opportunity arose to come to Wakefield, I was certainly keen to make the move," Monaghan told the club's official website.

"Wakefield is a club with a long history. I was really impressed with what the club seemed to offer after seeing how they played last year and the attitude they go around their footy with."

Wakefield can be backed at 40/1 with Sky Bet to win this season's Grand Final.

Chester is also looking forward to working alongside Monaghan.

"I am delighted to have Michael Monaghan come on board as assistant coach," he said.

"We took our time to decide who would be the perfect fit for Trinity and Michael ticked a lot of our expectations.

"He had a fantastic playing career at Warrington before taking that step up as Assistant Coach at Catalans. I am looking forward to working with him."

Wakefield begin the new Super League campaign away to Hull KR on February 2.
