Australia include seven Melbourne Storm players in World Cup squad

Australia have included seven players from Melbourne's victorious Grand Final-winning team in their 24-man squad for the 2017 World Cup.

Captain Cameron Smith is joined by his experienced Storm team-mates Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Will Chambers, along with newcomers Felise Kaufusi, Jordan McLean and Cameron Munster, with Australia Sky Bet's 4/11 favourites to win the tournament.

Slater, man of the match in Melbourne's 34-6 win over North Queensland on Sunday, is back after missing the Kangaroos' 2016 Four Nations success in England with a shoulder injury and there is also a recall for hooker Ben Hunt.

Other uncapped players are Dane Gagai (Newcastle Knights), Wade Graham (Cronulla) and Tom Trbojevic (Manly).

"This squad has the right mix of youth and experience, as well as an overall balance across the positions for a World Cup campaign," Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said.

"It was selected based on form, performances in the State of Origin series as well as previously in the green and gold jersey.

"We have a number of players who can play multiple positions and that will be an advantage over the course of what we hope will be six matches."

Meninga will take his full squad to Fiji for an exhibition match against both Fiji and Papua New Guinea on October 14 to prepare for their opening World Cup group match against England in Melbourne on October 27.
