Aoife Corrigan gives her verdict on Saturday's Irish Greyhound Derby final, with four selections in total for the card at Shelbourne Park.
An incredible night of action to look forward to with the big final itself due off at 9.24, with three bitches and three dogs in the final all in with a chance to land the huge prize pot up for grabs. Best of luck to all Connections with runners on the night.
Let's start with the feature race, the Irish Greyhound Derby, which can go to BORN WARRIOR in TRAP 5.
This dog is a real speed merchant, he has the fastest split to the third bend and if showing his trapping ability he can make them all go. Trap 1 Callaway Pro Am is unbeaten in the Derby for last year's winning trainer Owen Mckenna but on a night for the front-runners, if Born Warrior can get loose at the front he can hang on for an all-the-way win.
My first selection runs in at 8.26 which is an open 575 and I am going to side with Trap 1 Hanover Phantom. This dog managed to reach the third round of the Derby and is well drawn here on the inside. Trap 5 Good Cody is an incredibly fast trapper who will be looking to set the pace but is having his first start over the distance so there have to be concerns over his staying ability. By contrast the selection is a C&D winner who can reel that one in.
Onto my second selections which runs in the Derby Plate at 9.05 and for me it's all about Trap 5 Kildare, who has been paw perfect in the Plate so far, is the fastest in the line-up and, with another slick performance, will be hard to stop. Trap 1 Garryvoe Joe has got huge pace and using the inside line can have a say but Kildare isn’t flanked with much early and if wearing his trapping boots, he can take a handy position and stamp his class on the race.
Finally in the Derby consolation at 9.44 I am siding with Trap 4 Coolavanny Hoffa who was very unlucky in the semi-finals, is the fastest in the line-up and has the best early speed. He has the class to put these to the sword.
