Day four report

Teenage spinner Hamidullah Qadri had a debut to remember as his second-innings five-wicket haul inspired Derbyshire to their first Specsavers County Championship victory for two years.

The 16-year-old, who is the youngest player to feature for Derbyshire in the Championship, took five for 60 from 26.3 overs to skittle Glamorgan for 172 and secure Derby a 39-run win in Cardiff.

On a turning pitch, 57.3 of the 69.3 overs were bowled by spinners as Glamorgan failed in their pursuit of 212, handing Derbyshire their first triumph in this format since beating Leicestershire in July 2015.

Qadri was well supported by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis and Wayne Madsen, an occasional off-spinner who took two crucial mid-innings wickets.

Glamorgan had started the day on nought for one, but were soon losing wickets as nightwatchman Timm van der Gugten was caught at midwicket off Qadri and Mendis had Owen Morgan snaffled at slip.

When Glamorgan's leading run-scorer Colin Ingram holed out at mid-on off Qadri, the hosts were struggling on 42 for four.

Resuming at 64 for four after tea, Nick Selman and Aneurin Donald consolidated and added 50 for the fifth wicket before Madsen, with the last ball of his first over, had Donald caught at short-leg by Alex Hughes, who had previously dropped three chances in that position.

Two individual overs later, Madsen took his second wicket when Selman, who made a patient 43 from 122 balls, was stumped down the leg side after the bowler saw him advancing down the pitch.

After Selman and Donald's partnership, Glamorgan had recognised batsmen left, but Andrew Salter and Graham Wagg were both dismissed by Qadri. Salter was leg-before sweeping at Qadri while Wagg was not happy to have been given out caught down the leg side off the spinner, when replays suggested the ball came off his chest.

Marchant de Lange threatened with a few lusty blows before he was needlessly run out by Billy Godleman and Chris Cooke, who never looked in any trouble, was left stranded on 39 not out when Michael Hogan chipped Qadri to midwicket.

Day three report

Derbyshire retained hope of a first Specsavers County Championship win since September 2015 after striking a late blow against Glamorgan on day three in Cardiff.

The home spectators who had waited four hours before play started were rewarded for their patience as they saw Derbyshire dismissed for 160 in 44.2 overs, to leave Glamorgan 212 to win.

But that could start to look a high target in the pink-ball day-night clash, particularly without Jacques Rudolph who was trapped lbw by leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis from the final delivery of the day. Glamorgan went run-less in the first six overs of their second innings.

Derbyshire last won in the four-day game when they defeated Leicestershire almost two years ago, but with plenty of turn for Mendis and 16-year-old off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri, there was the prospect of uncomfortable times ahead for Glamorgan's batsmen in this Division Two clash.

Resuming at two without loss, Derbyshire lost both nightwatchmen in Marchant de Lange's first two overs.

Tom Taylor was bowled by the fourth ball of the day, before Tony Palladino was caught at cover point from a leading edge.

Billy Godleman, who had batted 43 overs for his 34 in the first innings, counter-attacked effectively to score 27 from 22 balls, before he became De Lange's third victim when he parried a lifting ball to gully.

Andrew Salter was introduced when De Lange was rested, and despite being swept for four by Wayne Madsen from successive balls, Salter got his revenge when Madsen prodded to short leg.

Luis Reece held the innings together with a fluent half-century which included eight boundaries, but Derbyshire then lost four wickets for 16 runs.

Graham Wagg removed Gary Wilson and Alex Hughes, while Salter, obtaining enough turn to trouble the batsmen, also took two wickets, including Reece for 55.

After a breezy knock of 27 from Mendis, the innings ended with Timm van der Gugten taking the final two wickets in successive overs.

Day two report

Tony Palladino claimed four wickets as Derbyshire took a 51-run first-innings lead in their Specsavers County Championship Second Division clash with Glamorgan at The SSE Swalec.

Palladino took four for 36 and Sri Lanka leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis three for 68 as the hosts were dismissed for 237 with only Nick Selman passing 50.

Palladino took three for three to reduce Glamorgan to 68 for three after they had made a solid start before spinners Mendis and 16-year-old Hamidullah Qadri took centre stage.

Qadri, the youngest player to play championship cricket for Derbyshire, captured his first wicket when his arm ball found the edge of Andrew Salter's bat and was caught at slip.

Qadri's figures of 15-8-16-1 reflected how tightly he bowled and vindicated head coach Kim Barnett's decision to include him in the first team at such an early age.

Jacques Rudolph and nightwatchman Timm van der Gugten put on 49 for the first wicket before they were both out in successive overs. Owen Morgan departed without scoring and Colin Ingram was out in the final over before tea and suddenly Glamorgan had slipped to 87 for four.

They recovered after Selman and Aneurin Donald put on 64 for the fifth wicket before Donald was undone by the left-arm seam of Luis Reece for 38.

Selman, who scored a century against Durham last week, went on to hit 50 before he was leg before to Mendis, who took his third wicket when Chris Cooke was caught at backward point.

At 198 for eight, Glamorgan were 90 runs adrift, but Graham Wagg and Marchant de Lange added 39 for the ninth wicket to earn the Welsh county a batting point.

Derbyshire moved their advantage on to 53 as they closed on two without loss from two overs by stumps.

Day one report

Derbyshire's Hamidullah Qadri made history on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Glamorgan.

Qadri, 16, became the first player born in the year 2000 to play in county cricket as Derbyshire were bowled out for 288 in the Division Two day-night fixture.

Number 11 Qadri came out to bat under the lights and survived being bowled off a no ball as he made an unbeaten 11, aiding a Derbyshire recovery that saw 131 runs added for the last three wickets.

Glamorgan ended an interesting day's cricket at five without loss after losing the toss at Sophia Gardens.

Derbyshire lost their first wicket in the fourth over when Luis Reece was lbw to Timm van der Gugten but Wayne Madsen (70) and Billy Godleman (34) added 98 for the second wicket.

Van der Gugten broke the partnership when Madsen (70) edged one to the wicketkeeper and Godleman followed when a rare attempt at an expansive shot resulted in another catch for Chris Cooke behind the stumps.

Marchant de Lange had Gary Wilson caught behind before Graham Wagg claimed two wickets in successive overs when Alex Hughes was lbw and Jeevan Mendis was caught low down at second slip by Nick Selman.

With the penultimate ball before the second break, Derbyshire lost their seventh wicket when Tom Taylor became Van der Gugten's third victim and Cooke's fourth when he was caught behind.

Derbyshire recovered in the evening session, with Daryn Smit and Tom Milnes adding 66 for the eighth wicket before Smit picked out gully off De Lange.

Milnes reached his half-century before edging behind to Cooke off Michael Hogan, who ended the innings by having Tony Palladino caught at mid-off, but Derbyshire would have been pleased by their recovery.
