Our Punting Pointers team landed a 25/1 winner at Newmarket over the weekend - check out the Monday preview and tips.
1pt win Milliterries in 3.00 Redcar at 3/1 (General) - 11/4 minimum
0.5pts e.w. Mambha in 4.30 Redcar at 16/1 (General 1/5 1,2,3,4) - take no lower
The management at Redcar have applied 3mm of water overnight after a dry spell, and we can expect the track to ride on the quick side of good, so top-of-the-ground performers will be favoured. There will also be a slight headwind which means front-runners will be slightly disadvantaged, for all a position near the far rail could again be a bonus as it often is on the Cleveland course.
MILLITERRIES has raced only at 7f to date but the daughter of Territories is bred for further and looks the type to progress in handicaps as a three-year-old having been campaigned sparingly as a juvenile for the purposes of attaining a mark. James Fanshawe’s filly ran with credit on all three starts, ending her campaign with a close third to Veiled Illusion and Pitney at Lingfield in October.
That pair are rated 80 and 81 now and an opening mark of 70 for Milliterries looks very fair. She coped well with quick ground on debut (just behind a 77-rated rival) and this extra furlong should eke out enough progress to see her off the mark.
Another lightly raced sort who looks capable of progressing past exposed rivals on the card is Ed Bethell’s Elim, who showed plenty of ability in her qualifying runs and progressed markedly to make a winning handicap debut at Musselburgh in April last year, beating Iato’s Angel over this trip with the pair a long way clear of next-time-out winner Ana Gold.
Elim travelled notably well that day, and quickly went clear when asked for her effort two furlongs out, allowing the runner-up a half chance as she idled but rallying again when challenged. She looked to have plenty in hand and although Iato’s Angel disappointed next time, she went on to win off a 3lb higher mark at the same track in the summer, and the form is solid.
The obvious concern for Elim is the absence, but Ed Bethell has a good record when bringing his handicappers back from a break, as shown by the same connections’ Point Lynas at York last week, and a 6lb rise for Musselburgh is very lenient on balance.
Too backward to run as a juvenile, MAMBHA was one of a pair for the Michael Dods stable in a 6f 3-y-o+ maiden at Pontefract in early April, and she took the eye in the preliminaries as a filly who would benefit from that patient approach.
A half-sister to juvenile winners Mamba Wamba (5½f, useful) and Chatburn (5f) She has the build of a sprinter but is more of a late-maturing sort and predictably found things happening a bit too quickly for her behind stablemate Close Connection.
Mambha was then turned out twice more within a week later in the month, still looking green and lacking know-how, but as a result she has been handed a lowly mark of 57. Dods does well at his local track, and his 3-y-o handicap debutants are 3-24 here in the last two decades, with winners at 25/1, 7/1 and 7/2.
