Discover Sporting Life Plus BenefitsThe two-mile handicap hurdle at Thurles on Sunday was ultimately dominated by a couple of six-year-olds, with a five-year-old back in third. Victory went to Joseph O'Brien's New Ross but Marvel Fan will surely be found an opportunity to go one better this winter.
Tony Martin's mare was fit from the Flat and looked potentially well handicapped based on her neck second to Irregularheartbeat at Fairyhouse in April, and she duly stepped up on her Flat run at Navan in October.
If jockey Peter Carberry had his time again he'd probably delay his run, given Marvel Fan travelled well just behind the leaders before finding herself in front on the run between the second-last and the final flight.
She pricked her ears on sight of the last and didn't find a lot for pressure before appearing to rally once re-headed by the winner, going down by just half a length.
She's got experience over fences too and can run off a lower mark in that sphere should connections wish to do so but, either way, she's well worth another chance on the back of this effort.

Discover Sporting Life Plus BenefitsZealot failed to justify favouritism on his first start for Mick Appleby but he was only narrowly denied, going down by just a nose, and it shouldn't be long before he's off the mark for this yard which does so well with its recruits.
The eventual winner, Perfect Swiss, quickened best to lead approaching the final furlong, but Zealot rallied well and only just failed to get there.
He's relatively lightly raced on the all-weather, has a nice pedigree and should have more to offer for this yard after such a promising start.

Discover Sporting Life Plus BenefitsThe concluding six-furlong handicap at Southwell on Thursday looks like a strong piece of form for the grade. The winner, Politics, is on the up for his new yard, the runner-up, Triggered, has slipped to a very handy mark, while the frame was filled by a couple of in-form sorts.
Claim The Stars, who was dropped in from a wide draw, came home strongly in third, faring best of those who were held up.
This was another solid effort which underlined that he is on a competitive mark and in decent form.

Few managed to land a blow in this novice, with the field well strung out and nothing getting into it from behind, and while the winner Mr Mistoffelees caused a 33/1 surprise, there was a promising debut from the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained runner-up Tajawal.
Racing handily, Tajawal ran green on the home turn and took a while to get organised in the straight but kept on well in the final furlong to go down by a neck, looking sure to progress and win races on this evidence.
He’s bred to be an above-average colt too, by Frankel out of a useful Godolphin filly, Feedyah, who was placed in the UAE 1000 Guineas and Oaks. She’s bred three winners so far, including Aaddeey who showed form verging on smart for Tajawal’s connections when winning handicaps at Newmarket and Doncaster over a mile and a half last year.

Discover Sporting Life Plus BenefitsThere was plenty of potential on show in this fillies' novice which was won in impressive fashion by Charlie Appleby newcomer Queen of Fairies, though the second, Brightly, and third, The Ivy, should also be winning before long.
Brightly, the 6/4 favourite, had the benefit of a run under her belt but The Ivy shaped nicely on her debut to finish only a short-head behind the runner-up.
The Ivy, who boasts a nice pedigree being out of a smart listed-winning mare, showed her inexperience when asked for her effort, running green approaching the final furlong, but she kept on against the far rail. This was an encouraging introduction and she is entitled to be sharper for the experience.

Discover Sporting Life Plus BenefitsMUMAYAZ was coming off a 13-week break, having also left Mark Loughnane, and ran well despite having to cover more ground than the winner Calonne.
Held up after being slowly away, the three-year-old made headway out wide over two furlongs from home and ran on strongly to the line, going down by a length-and-a-quarter.
He has joined the Tony Carroll yard on a 14 lbs lower mark than he started the campaign, and it will be a surprise if he doesn't win races this winter for his new team.
