Ian Ogg has the best bets from around the tracks on Saturday with his Nap in action at Doncaster.
All the attention will be on Aintree third Annamix for Willie and Patrick Mullins but this is competitive and preference at the likely prices is for PREMIER MAGIC, winner of the 2023 Hunters' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and back to form after a low-key run there this March when second last time out. He still retains plenty of ability on that evidence and should enjoy the slightly better ground on offer here.
Gelded over the winter and upped in trip for his handicap/seasonal debut at Kempton, SIR GALAHAD almost landed the gamble when finding just the one too good (winner has since finished second off higher mark) and I can't imagine a 1lb rise in the ratings will be enough to stop James Ferguson's son of Churchill putting in another big effort here. The cheekpieces applied for the first time at Kempton are understandably retained and the good to soft ground shouldn't be an issue.

A 2lb rise for a narrow Thirsk success in something of a blanket finish is perfectly reasonable but that form may turn out to be useful and YORKSHIRE didn't go unbacked that day. That was his first start since gelding and wind operations and those procedures were clearly expected to benefit him and so it proved. Generally progressive prior to that, some of last season's form reads notably well such as his defeat of the now 98 rated Ferrous and while he can't be judged on that alone there are other formlines which suggest he could still be some way ahead of the handicapper.
Persica ran well in the London Gold Cup on his first attempt at this trip and has obvious claims but so, too, does PORTSMOUTH whose yard has saddled three of the last six winners. Like many of these Portsmouth is unexposed at the distance and didn't give himself the best chance of lasting home at Goodwood (on heavy) on his first try when racing too keenly but he may settle better here with that experience under his belt. He won impressively at this track prior to that on decent ground and can continue to progress.
It's something of a cliché that horses from this stable can bounce back from a bad run but with good reason and it's worth forgiving INDIVIDUALISM his no-show in the London Gold Cup. He didn't go without support for that traditionally strong contest where the longer trip was expected to show him in a better light and, while that still may be the case, he should have no difficulty in dropping back a furlong where he ran with promise behind Ice Max previously.
The switch to handicapping has coincided with improved returns for SOIR DE GALA and there's no sign that the assessor has caught up with him. It wasn't the strongest race that he won at Fakenham but his jockey was able to ease him down at the finish and Soir De Gala can make light of a 7lb rise in the weights now that he's settling significantly better than early in his career.
A beaten favourite twice in three starts, GET A SUPERSTAR isn't living up to expectations but the return to racing on a testing surface should suit this heavy ground bumper winner and he can take a step forward. He didn't enjoy a great deal of fortune on his handicap debut at Market Rasen having been a little short of room and he should be suited by the demands of this test.
APPIER came into the race in better form when winning last year's renewal but took a step back in the right direction at Kempton last time and is rated 1lb lower (than when successful here). He has two wins from three visits to this track and everything points to a big run.
JEUDIDEE is related to winning chasers and can get off the mark on his first attempt in this sphere. He didn't threaten at Warwick last time but the race wasn't run to suit and it was his first start since October and may have been needed. A winner on top of the ground at Warwick and Worcester last summer before adding an impressive success at Exeter (on good to firm) to his haul, there should be plenty more to come and any quickening of conditions will be in his favour.
