Racing betting tips: Friday February 6
1pt e.w Arnhem in the 20:30 Newcastle at 11/1 (General 1/5 1,2,3,4, min 10/1)
16:30 Newcastle – Class 5 (0-75) Handicap 1m5y
Hunterian will be fancied by a few to make a winning handicap debut for Charlie Johnston but he’s been handed a stiff opening mark of 62 on what he’s done so far, and he needs to improve. Sailor Batt ran better last time but it’s five months since David and Nicola Barrons had a winner and that once-powerful stable appears on the wane.
Maria De Silva has to be the one to beat after scoring over 7f here last time and the fact she didn’t get on top until late suggests this extra furlong will be in her favour. 67 looks a fair opening mark. Of the rest, Quick Turn, at the foot of the handicap, showed little in three starts over six furlongs but did much better upped to a mile on handicap debut last week, fading late; that was his first start since August and he should strip fitter, so it’s dangerous to assume that he didn’t stay, and this race will reveal more.
17:00 Newcastle – Class 5 (0-70) Handicap 7f14y
Call Glory has been mopping up some poor Classified events but is now forced into a better class race. He was better than the bare form when landing a 0-50 contest at Southwell last time, but this represents a much stiffer task and he is opposable on that basis.
Judgment Call will give this a go from the front but isn’t really in form and might be better at 6f while Flowstate is running consistently but simply doesn’t win enough, so the solid option looks to be Goldmoyne, who has form figures here of 31122, The handicapper has raised him 4lb for his latest second to Aisling Oscar but he was only beaten half a length and the pair were nicely clear, so that rise looks more than fair. In a race full of ifs and buts, he looks the one sure to run his race.
Fortamour is in good form but won’t be able to dictate these at a slow pace, as was the case last time, and a 3lb rise in a better race demands more. Can never rule a horse that’s been in good form out, but this just might be a bit too tough.
Twilight Fun ran really well at Chelmsford a week ago, that after a near two-month break; he showed terrific early pace and was clear of them off the bend, but couldn’t quite keep up the gallop, and faded late for second. All the same, that’s a very good effort and he should strip fitter for it tonight. He usually races at Chelmsford but clearly acts on Tapeta fine and has a solid chance here.
If they go a bit too quick then ARNHEM might be the one to pick them up. After a couple of flat efforts in December he bounced back to form when second to Vantheman here last time out, that over five furlongs and this step back up to six (he stays seven on a good day) looks beneficial. He looks the each-way poke against the principals.
