Things haven't gone to plan since Norfolk Blue looked a winner in waiting when a strong-finishing second at Doncaster in June, the run of the race against him on his next outing, then not getting the clearest of runs when filling the same position last time. Though not an unlucky loser at Sandown, this mark remains exploitable and the switch to a visor and booking of Oisin Murphy, combined with a race which should suit his patient style could be the perfect storm to see him finally get off the mark.

Syosset remains winless after eight starts over hurdles, but he has done little wrong in handicaps this season, progressing with each outing. He finished third and second behind Del Boys Diva at Roscommon and Wexford, with that rival improving and seen to maximum effect on both occasions, before chasing home the well-treated Ina Mina in a 16-runner Cork handicap just 5 days ago. The quick turnaround is a possible concern, but he has handled a similarly short break on the Flat, and the booking of excellent-value 5 lb conditional Michael Kenneally suggests connections are keen to exploit his current good form while he remains on a clearly workable mark.

The on-going dry spell has seen Lingfield's card switched from turf to all-weather and that can work in the favour of Huscal, who I think is a bit better on an artificial surface. Though yet to win on it, he's got three very good runs at Kempton at the end of last season that read very well in the context of this small-field 0-80, finishing runner-up off 83 and 85 and unlucky not to finish closer when fifth in between those efforts. He's been running quite well on turf this season and faced an impossible task in hindsight last time behind Thursday's impressive Sandown winner Desert Shadow. The Charlie Hills stable is going as well now as it has all year and this looks a good opportunity for Huscal to get off the mark for the year.
