14:20 York

Hopefully, Will Scarlet will jump out and try and make all here, as he did at Meydan last time, because if he doesn’t, this could be run at a false pace, which makes it harder to predict.

There's very little between Klassleader and SING US A SONG on their Haydock form over 1¾m in the autumn and both should improve again this season. Sing Us A Song has the advantage of race fitness here, having finished third at Epsom a fortnight ago, and with his stable banging in winners in recent days, he gets a narrow vote over his old rival.

Prince Of The Seas looked rusty on his first start for David O’Meara at Ripon last month, but he wasn’t beaten that far in the end, so he should strip fitter, and the fitting of cheekpieces is a generic positive for the yard, making him another to consider in a handicap which should throw up plenty of future winners.

The accepted wisdom is that low draws should have the best of it in sprints at York, but recent runnings of this race suggest that those who race on the front end from low draws are vulnerable, and I’d be looking for something with cover to strike late, with mid-to-high draws not inconvenienced.

Dark Thirty is the most obvious leader on the far side form stall 4 and might get an uncontested lead, and he’s not without interest; a winner over 7f here a couple of seasons back he was second to Rousing Encore in this last year, beaten a length and a quarter, and is a pound lower this time around. The concern is that a slight headwind in the straight will make it harder for front runners.

Pilgrim is another pretty obvious candidate for this, having won the Scottish Sprint Cup on rain-eased ground at Musselburgh last month. He’s a class act when on song and finished strongly to win that 5f contest, suggesting he would not mind a return to further.

His wins have largely come at the shorter trip, but he won over 6f here as a juvenile and will cope better with the heavy showers forecast at York than some of his main rivals.

Plenty of pace forecast thanks to Quinault, Cool Hoof Luke, the speedy Regional and perhaps even Diligent Harry. Big Mojo has proven Group 1 form but has a penalty to carry for that, and he won’t appreciate any further rain. That’s a comment that applies to several others, and if looking at this race through the lens of yielding to soft ground, only a few make serious appeal.

Quinault won the Garrowby Stakes here on soft ground a couple of seasons back although he wasn’t as good when tried on an easy surface last term. He won’t find it easy to make all here, and may set the race up for Kind of Blue, who won the British Champions Sprint soft ground in 2024 and was kept to quick ground in the UK last year, looking uncomfortable when trying to defend his crown at Ascot in October.

He needs to show he can pick up in better form than he did last year but remains lightly raced under his preferred conditions and is of definite interest in a race that will be run to suit his strong-finishing style.

Kind Of Blue (red cap) wins the Champions Sprint

Last year, Rare Change was dropped right out from a wide draw before coming through to win, and we were keen on the chances of Passing Thought doing the same here, and while she is now a non-runner, the race she won at Wetherby last time may still provide the key.

Passing Thought beat Hasbro Market and GOLD QUEEN KINDLY at Wetherby, a similar track in terms of topography to nearby York, and the last-named is overpriced here having joined Roger Fell from Karl Burke in the interim. That move will put many punters off, but Fell has a fine record taking on horses from other yards, as he again showed when Zarvali won on debut for the yard at Catterick on Monday having also left a more high-profile stable, in this case, Johnny Murtagh. That win made it 7-39 for horses starting out for the trainer after switching stables, with a profit for punters backing them all to a £10 stake of £280 at SP and £458.50 at Betfair SP.

Gold Queen Kindly is a gelding by Lope de Vega out of Queen Kindly (why don’t Weatherbys refuse names when owners name their horses so badly?) who is well handicapped on the pick of his juvenile form, the pick of which was a close fifth in Mill Reef and when beaten just 2½ lengths off 91 on his only nursery outing, both on easy ground; he showed he’d trained on well when 1¼ lengths behind Hasbro Market at Wetherby having made the running and is 2lb better off now.

On paper, he will do well to turn the tables, but his wide draw is no negative and he looks too big at 25/1 and above in the betting.
