Tuesday's football talking points: Jurgen Klopp the 'complete manager', Guardiola believes City can complete Champions League comeback

We take a look at the big football news, talking points and what's trending on Tuesday morning...

Van Dijk - Klopp the 'complete manager'

Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool have the "complete manager" in Jurgen Klopp, whom he insists is so much more than a touchline cheerleader.

The German again goes head-to-head with arguably the greatest coach of his generation in Pep Guardiola, against whom he has a better record than anyone else, having won seven of their 13 encounters.

But while the Manchester City boss is quite rightly hailed as a footballing genius, the praise for Klopp can be less forthcoming, with the assumption being the brand of football he plays is less complex, while his over-the-top technical-area antics often detract from a more rounded assessment of his tactics.

Van Dijk, who has only worked with the 50-year-old for just over three months, says there is plenty more the public do not see.

"He is the complete manager. He is a fantastic team manager, player manager as well, and everyone is working hard together," said the Holland captain.

"Obviously that (interaction with crowd) stays more in people's minds because that is what you see, but he is much more than that.

"You don't see all the hard work we put in behind the scenes. He has shown already that he is an outstanding manager."

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola believes City can pull off Champions League comeback

Pep Guardiola believes his "exceptional" Manchester City side can pull off one of the great Champions League comebacks by producing the perfect game against Liverpool.

City need to overturn a 3-0 aggregate deficit in the second leg of their quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium but Guardiola is confident despite a dismal past week.

City's humbling in the first leg at Anfield last Wednesday was followed by another capitulation as they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to rivals Manchester United in their derby on Saturday.

Both games saw the normally dominant City exposed and concede three goals in periods of less than 20 minutes. The latter loss also shattered City's hopes of wrapping up the Premier League title with a record six games remaining.

That has arguably made the past six days the most disappointing of Guardiola's reign but he remains upbeat and is determined to fight to the end to continue the European run.

"My team is extraordinary," said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference. "My team is not comparable to many others. It is top. My team is exceptional.

"It is a joy to be manager of that team, even two days ago, after the way we played. I am so delighted.

"Of course to go through you have to make almost the perfect game, to create a lot of chances, be clinical, concede few chances. And the chances we are going to receive - our keeper needs to save them. All the conditions have to be perfect to go through."

The Hawthorns

West Brom's safe-standing plans blocked

The government has rejected a request from West Brom to introduce a safe-standing section at The Hawthorns next season.

West Brom, who are bottom of the Premier League and 10 points adrift of safety with five games to play, had hoped to install 3,600 rail seats in the ground's Smethwick End and have described the decision as "disappointing" and "short-sighted".

The application was made to the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA), the government agency set up to regulate sports stadia after the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, and it referred the proposal to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

In a statement, the SGSA said the club's request was rejected by sports minister Tracey Crouch.

"West Bromwich Albion is subject to the government's all-seater policy and DCMS have said that they have no current plans to change their position and introduce standing accommodation at grounds in the top two divisions covered by the all-seater policy," it added.

A DCMS spokesperson confirmed it had "no plans" to change its policy but said it "will continue to monitor the issue of spectator accommodation and the use of safe standing where it is permitted".

Roma

Roma urged to 'do the unthinkable'

Eusebio Di Francesco has urged his Roma players to give their all as they attempt to "do the unthinkable" and eliminate the Barcelona "machine" from the Champions League.

Edin Dzeko's late away goal in a 4-1 first-leg defeat at the Nou Camp could prove key as the Serie A club vie to reach the semi-finals at the expense of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and company.

Their preparation for Tuesday night's showdown at the Stadio Olimpico was not ideal as they lost 2-0 at home to Fiorentina at the weekend, but head coach Di Francesco did manage to rest some key players.

Ahead of the return leg he also teased the return to contention of several wild-card options, including Cengiz Under, the young Turk whose scoring streak was interrupted by an injury last month.

Whoever plays, Di Francesco is demanding Barca are faced down with "passion, heart and belief".

He said at a pre-match press conference: "We must always play at our best for this shirt, even more so in this game since we have to overturn the scoreline from the first leg.

"The crowd will be our 12th man, but it's up to us to get them going.

"We'll play our strongest line-up against Barcelona. We must play with passion, heart and belief right up until the final whistle if we want to do the unthinkable.

"We have a duty to give it everything."

Ryan Sessegnon scores for Fulham

Fulham's Sessegnon sends Cardiff a warning

Ryan Sessegnon has warned Cardiff that Fulham are ready to pounce in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Cardiff's dramatic defeat by Wolves on Friday night allowed Fulham to cut the gap to the second-placed Bluebirds to just two points.

Fulham have put together an incredible 19-match unbeaten run to eat away at Cardiff's cushion, and can leapfrog them into the Championship top two if they beat Reading on Tuesday night and Neil Warnock's side stumble at Aston Villa.

  • Cardiff - 4/7
  • Fulham - 5/4
  • Aston Villa - 33/1

Teenage full-back Sessegnon admits the Fulham squad were watching events in Cardiff closely on Friday night before securing a 1-0 victory at Sheffield Wednesday less than 24 hours later.

"We were aware that we needed to take advantage of that," Sessegnon told the club's official website.

"We all watched the game and knew that if Cardiff slipped up then it was our chance to pounce by getting three points and closing the gap on them.

"It is especially pleasing because the gap used to be so big.

"Now we have the belief, we've closed the gap and we keep winning games, so we're just raring to go in the next match."
