Sky Bet EFL: March Player of the Month awards for the Championship, League One and League Two

We round up the news and reaction following the announcement of the the Player of the Month in the three Sky Bet EFL divisions.

Mitrovic: Fulham loanee scoops March award

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for March.

He has provided the missing piece of the Fulham puzzle since joining on loan in January.

His strength and ability to hold the ball up, bringing teammates into play, have been matched by his finishing ability with five goals in as many games.

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic said: “Aleksandar has shown strength, quality and perseverance to score important goals and assist his teammates too.

“I congratulate him for winning the award for March and I expect that he will continue to offer good performances to help the team in this crucial moment of the Championship season.”

Mitrovic said: “I’m happy and proud, I’d like to thank my team mates for helping me to achieve this and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

“From the first minute here, I adapted really fast and my teammates have helped me a lot. I feel good to play every game on the pitch so I hope that we’ll be able to fight for automatic promotion for the rest of the season.

“I needed to leave Newcastle because I needed game time and needed games in my legs and I was desperate to play football, to be on the pitch, to score goals.

Sky Bet: Fulham 80/1 to win the Championship

“It works perfectly for me, I really enjoy it here, my family enjoy it and I hope it continues. The manager, obviously being Serbian too, helped me a lot and the style they play, the players they have, I like a lot.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Never really able to command a regular starting place at Newcastle United under Rafa Benitez, Mitrovic found chances hard to come by in the Premier League.

“However, he’s been rejuvenated under Jokanovic at Fulham, and since his debut, only Patrick Bamford has scored more goals than him.

“Mitrovic seems like he’s a player who is at his best when he feels loved and his coach, team mates and Fulham fans are certainly giving him that.

“He offers Fulham something different and if he keeps firing, you can imagine Fulham winning all of their remaining games and pushing the top two all of the way for automatic promotion.”

Chey Dunkley: Double monthly award for Wigan

Wigan defender Chey Dunkley has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for March.

Commanding in both boxes and with a natural ability to snuff out danger or sniff out a goal, he enjoyed himself at both ends of the pitch in March, contributing three goals and four successive clean sheets to Wigan’s promotion charge.

Wigan manager Paul Cook - winner of March's Manager of the Month award - said: “Chey has been brilliant all season for us and has formed a great direct partnership with Dan Burn in the centre of defence.

“It’s a massive squad effort, though, and Chey would be the first to acknowledge the contributions of his teammates towards this award.”

Dunkley said: “Throughout the season, we’ve always tried to have a strong foundation, which gives us the best chance of winning games.

“We go into the game looking to keep clean sheets and hopefully we’ve got the quality up there to score a goal to take us over the line.

Sky Bet: Wigan 4/6 to win League One

“I like to say I’m aggressive in the air and like to get my head on things. I wouldn’t say I was always working on the offensive side of the game but I do fancy myself to get goals here and there and chip in from defense.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Wigan’s stellar month was built on defensive stability, with four clean sheets and Dunkley and Dan Burn provide a solid base from which the rest of the team can perform.

“When you start to add goals to that, especially three in a single month, he becomes an invaluable asset and he’ll be one of the first names on the team sheet.”

Cheltenham's Eisa caps off thrilling month

Cheltenham Town striker Mohamed Eisa has been named the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month for March.

After a nomination last month, Eisa went one better after four goals in five games. These all came in the away victories at Swindon and Crawley, where he also won a penalty. Constantly on the move, he is calmness personified in front of goal.

Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson said: “It is a great and thoroughly deserved accolade for Mo and rich reward for his excellent form over the last few months.

“Mo has enjoyed a wonderful first full season in the Football League. He is learning and getting better with every game and hopefully the fact that his ability has been recognised and rewarded in this way will now spur him on to finish the season really strongly.”

Eisa said: “I'm absolutely delighted to get the award. I was nominated last month too and came close then so it is nice to go one better and be named as the winner.

“It's been a good March for both me and the team, with some positive results especially on the road.

“It's always great to win any award and I thank my team-mates for the part they played in helping me achieve this.

Sky Bet: Cheltenham 22/1 for top-half League Two finish in 17/18

“Now I just want to use it as a springboard to kick on and perform well until the end of the season."

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Mo Eisa was unlucky to miss out on last month’s award, and has showed brilliant consistency in his debut EFL season.

“Vital doubles in March gave Cheltenham six much needed points, but his contribution throughout the season has impressed and he’s behind only Billy Kee in the running for the League Two Golden Boot this season.”

The judging panel for the Sky Bet Player of the Month comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL Communications Director Mark Rowan, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet EFL trader Mikey Mumford.
