Holders Liverpool lost 1-0 away to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
The Reds were undone by a rare defensive lapse from a corner in only the fourth minute.
Koke's cross was not dealt with and the ball squirmed through to Saul Niguez, who fired in from close range.
Liverpool created a couple of chances to equalise, but Mohamed Salah headed wide and Jordan Henderson's hooked effort drifted the wrong side of the post.
A frustrating night saw Reds boss Jurgen Klopp shown a yellow card and left them with it all to do in the second leg at Anfield in three weeks.
Here, the PA news agency rates each Reds player's performance...
Alisson Becker: Made some important saves to keep his side in the game, especially towards the end of the first half. - 7 (out of 10)
Trent Alexander-Arnold: Had a number of opportunities to get forward, but often his crosses missed their targets. - 7
Joe Gomez: Lots of passes in the middle of the park, but none with real purpose, was tidy in defence following the goal. - 6
Virgil Van Dijk: Worked well with Gomez in the centre of the Liverpool defence and impressed when passing out from the back after an uncharacteristically nervy opening few minutes. - 6
Andy Robertson: His defensive work prevented a good chance for Morata and got forward often in the first half. - 7
Fabinho: Did not create many attacking moves, but worked well with the other two midfielders to keep possession. - 6
Jordan Henderson: Came close for Liverpool as they looked for an equaliser, and worked well linking between the midfield and the front three. - 7
Georginio Wijnaldum: Tidy performance alongside the captain in the centre of midfield, and controlled the ball for large parts of the match. - 7
Mohamed Salah: Was Liverpool's most lively attacking threat and had a number of close chances, including a deflected effort towards the end of the first half. - 7
Roberto Firmino: Struggled to break down the Atletico defence and create clear-cut chances, was the central focus of Liverpool's attack which had no shots on target. - 5
Sadio Mane: Largely ineffective before he went off at half time after picking up a yellow card. - 6
Substitutes
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (for Salah, 72): Came on with less than 20 minutes remaining in the match and did not create many chances. - 6
Divock Origi (for Mane, 45): Looked isolated on the wing after he came on at half time. - 5
James Milner (for Henderson, 80): Did not have time to affect the game after coming on for the captain in the 80th minute. - 5
