Coronavirus: Burnley confirm positive test for Ian Woan and Watford also confirm three positive results

One Watford player and two staff members, and Burnley assistant Ian Woan have tested positive for coronavirus, the clubs confirm.

Watford released the information themselves but will not be revealing names because those involved have asked for medical confidentiality to be maintained.

Before that announcement, Hornets captain Troy Deeney said that he would not return to training because he is worried about his family's safety.

Later on Tuesday, the Premier League announced that six unnamed players or staff had returned positive tests across three top-flight clubs following the league's first wave of mass testing.

Burnley released a statement of their own shortly after to confirm that Woan, 52, was one of those six people.

The former Nottingham Forest winger, who has been Sean Dyche's number two throughout the Burnley boss' eight-year managerial career, is not currently displaying any symptoms and the club say he is "safe and well" at home.

Like the other five Premier League players or staff members who have tested positive for Covid-19, Woan will now self-isolate for seven days.

"The first team squad and playing staff were all tested last weekend, ahead of a return to training.

"In line with strict Premier League requirements and following a positive test, Ian will now self-isolate for a period of seven days, with a view to being tested again week commencing Monday, 25th May.

"He will remain in close communication with club personnel regarding his re-engagement in training once he is clear of the virus.

"Everyone at Burnley Football Club sends their best wishes to Ian and his family.

"The club will continue to follow the first stage of the return to training protocol, while adhering to Premier League guidance in terms of testing all players and backroom staff twice per week."
