Wales centre Jamie Roberts set for shock Lions call

Warren Gatland would be plumping for experience as a priority criteria if he picks Jamie Roberts in his Lions squad ahead of England's Jonathan Joseph, according to Ugo Monye.

Reports suggest Lions boss Gatland has chosen his long-time Wales centre in the party that will head to New Zealand this summer.

The surprising choice would come after an RBS 6 Nations campaign in which 30-year-old Harlequins player Roberts was unable to earn a starting slot for his country.

Sky Sports News reported that Roberts had made the Lions cut, ahead of Wednesday's midday squad announcement.

Former England and Lions wing Monye told BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's an insight into how they think they can beat the New Zealanders. I personally have the opinion of gas over mass, but in saying that Jamie Roberts is a very experienced guy.

"He went on tour with myself in '09, he was player of the series. He does have a proven track record.

"The only caveat to that is he doesn't start international rugby for Wales and there you wonder if Warren Gatland is going for the comfort zone of picking players which he knows can perform at that level."

Speculation has surrounded England centre Jonathan Joseph missing out on the tour.

Monye added: "Jonathan Joseph to be excluded would be a huge surprise for myself, and it's the reports that we're hearing - Jamie Roberts' name is being listed tonight. It really is a guessing game at the 12th hour."
