Damien Hoyland hoping for more Edinburgh success

Damien Hoyland hopes Edinburgh's last-day win over Glasgow can be a springboard for lasting success next term.

The capital outfit shook off the disappointment of another sorry campaign to beat their rivals 29-18 at Scotstoun.

It was not enough to move the Myreside outfit up from ninth place in the Guinness PRO12 table.

But it has raised Hoyland's expectations ahead of Richard Cockerill's arrival this summer.

Hoyland - who capped a man-of-the-match display with his side's first try - told BBC Scotland: "Coming into this game we knew that it was all about energy and effort. Everything else came second.

"We came in at half-time having just conceded a try but we'd had two guys in the sin-bin and to have defended like we did was credit to us.

"We knew when the guys came back on we could push hard

"Glasgow came back at us and Lee Jones' try being disallowed for his foot being in touch was unlucky. That could have turned the game.

"But whatever would have happened we would not lose our focus. From the start we knew all we needed was energy and that's what it was going to take to beat them.

"We haven't beaten Glasgow at Scotstoun for a long time so going into next season this has given us a massive boost. If we play like this next year we will be sweet."

Glasgow will also have a change at the top as Dave Rennie arrives to take over from Gregor Townsend.

And full-back Stuart Hogg was disappointed his team could not give the new Scotland head coach a farewell after his glory-filled five-year reign.

He said: "I thought we were going to turn it around at the end but credit to Edinburgh, they were outstanding the whole game.

"We didn't perform anywhere near our best.

"The farewell stuff didn't get in the way of our focus at all. We wanted to send everybody off on a high but unfortunately we've not been able to do that.

"Gregor has turned this team around but unfortunately we've not given him the send-off he deserves.

"He has lifted this club massively. We got better and better every year but this year we've taken a little dip. We're usually trophy hunting but this year we're not and it's bitterly disappointing our season ends now."
