Sunday review

Wasps 21-24 Harlequns

Wasps tries: Wade (14), Cruse (54)
Conversions: Cipriani (15)
Penalties: Cipriani (5,37,62)

Harlequins tries: Yarde (24), Walker (43)
Conversions: Smith (43)
Penalties: Smith (3,21,68,71)

Joe Marler goaded James Haskell into a yellow card as Harlequins squeezed past Wasps 24-21 at the Ricoh Arena.

Quins inflicted Wasps' first Aviva Premiership loss in Coventry since a 26-16 defeat to Saracens in December 2015 in a bad-tempered affair.

Two late penalties for teenage fly-half Marcus Smith edged the visitors home, Wasps paying the price for yellow cards to both Haskell and Danny Cipriani.

British and Irish Lions and England team-mates Marler and Haskell clashed in an unsavoury first-half incident, that saw Wasps flanker Haskell sin-binned.

Haskell lost his cool and throttled Marler off the ball - but insisted that was because the Quins prop choked him and squirted him in the face with water.

An irate Haskell called on referee Andrew Jackson to review the incident, claiming of Marler "he choked me with my scrum cap" and also "he squirted water in my face".

Christian Wade and Tom Cruse struck tries for Wasps, but Marland Yarde and Charlie Walker responded for Quins.

But it was 18-year-old playmaker Smith who eventually booted the winning points as Wasps surrendered their 20-match Premiership winning streak at the Ricoh Arena.

Saturday review

Leicester 24-10 Gloucester

Leicester tries: Youngs (9, 15), Malouf (21)
Conversions: Ford (10, 17, 23)
Penalties: Ford (64)

Gloucester tries: Hohneck (42)
Conversions: Twelvetrees (43)
Penalties: Twelvetrees (49)

Leicester claimed a first Aviva Premiership victory of the season after a dominant opening 40 minutes sunk Gloucester at Welford Road.

The Tigers had never lost their opening three games of a Premiership campaign, but England scrum-half Ben Youngs' early try double and a Nick Malouf touchdown left Gloucester reeling, while George Ford kicked nine points.

The west-country club rallied after half-time as prop Josh Hohneck powered over for a try that Billy Twelvetrees converted, and he also kicked a penalty, yet Leicester were good value for the 24-10 win.

After coming unstuck against Bath and Northampton, Tigers knew they had to get their league campaign off and running, but after leading 21-0 early in the second quarter, their failure to collect a bonus point will frustrate them.

Newcastle 7-29 Saracens

Newcastle try: Goneva
Conversion: Hodgson

Saracens tries: Wyles penalty
Conversions: Farrell (2)
Penalties: Farrell (5)

Saracens returned to winning ways in the Aviva Premiership with a 29-7 victory over Newcastle Falcons in a showcase fixture staged at the Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia, USA.

A try from USA international Chris Wyles and 17 points from fly-half Owen Farrell carried Sarries to the win with a late penalty try, condemning the high-flying Falcons to their first defeat of the season.

The heat and humidity contributed to numerous handling errors that blighted what was the first game of a new four-year agreement between Premiership Rugby and promoters AEG, that is hoped will increase exposure for English rugby's top division while boosting the profile of the game in the States.

Friday review

Worcester 10-41 Exeter

Worcester tries: Alo
Conversions: Olver
Penalties: Olver

Exeter tries: Simmonds (2), Nowell, Hill, Woodburn
Conversions: Steenson (5)
Penalties: Steenson (2)

Exeter cruised to victory at Sixways as the Aviva Premiership champions recorded a second successive bonus-point win.

Worcester, bottom of the table and still to break their points duck this season, were swept aside by opponents far quicker in thought and deed, with Exeter posting a 41-10 victory to move top of the table.

Chiefs number eight Sam Simmonds scored the opening try and despite Worcester working overtime in defence, further scores followed before half-time for England and Lions wing Jack Nowell and lock Jonny Hill.

There was realistically no way back for Worcester after that, and although they claimed a try from juggernaut prop Biyi Alo that Sam Olver converted to add to an earlier penalty, Exeter pulled clear again through an Olly Woodburn touchdown and Simmonds' second score. Fly-half Gareth Steenson kicked 16 points.

It meant that Exeter maintained their 100 per cent record in English rugby's top flight against Worcester, sending them into Sunday week's rematch of the 2017 Premiership final against Wasps in fine shape.

Northampton 24-6 Bath

Northampton tries: Lawes, Ribbans (2), North
Conversions: Mallinder (2)

Bath penalties: Priestland (2)

Sam Underhill produced a superb defensive shift in front of Eddie Jones but it was not enough to prevent Bath slipping to a 24-6 defeat against Northampton.

Underhill marked his debut for the club he joined from the Ospreys during the summer by making 23 tackles in a display that successfully launched his quest to continue as England's openside for the autumn series.

The 21-year-old won his first cap in Argentina in June when James Haskell was involved in the British and Irish Lions tour and is in contention to start in the back row when the Pumas visit Twickenham on November 11.

For all Underhill's efforts at Franklin's Gardens - he was replaced in the 68th minute after sustaining a neck injury - Bath suffered their first defeat of the season as Northampton picked up where they left off against Leicester last Saturday.

Sale 36-7 London Irish

Sale tries: Harrison, Solomona (2), Charnley, Jennings
Conversions: MacGinty (4)
Penalties: MacGinty

London Irish tries: Penalty
Conversions: McNally

Denny Solomona touched down twice as Sale Sharks secured their first victory of the season following a comfortable 36-7 bonus-point triumph over 14-man London Irish.

The Sharks dominated the opening period and moved into a 24-0 lead at the break thanks to Ross Harrison's score and Solomona's double.

Josh Charnley then touched down to seal the five points before the away team were awarded a penalty try.

That proved to just a consolation, however, as Blair Cowan was sent off for a second yellow card and Mark Jennings completed the win.
