Adam Higson could be banned for up to eight matches

Leigh winger Adam Higson could be banned for up to eight matches after being charged with making a stiff-arm tackle.

Higson was sent off by referee James Child 55 minutes into his side's 36-22 Betfred Super League defeat by Salford on the second day of the Magic Weekend in Newcastle for a high and late challenge on full-back Gareth O'Brien.

He has been charged by an independent match review panel with a grade E offence, which carries a ban of between four and eight matches.

Higson, who is alleged to have made no attempt to make a legitimate tackle, does not have the option of submitting an early-guilty plea and, therefore, will face a hearing in Leeds on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Catalans Dragons loose forward Greg Bird has been accused of intentionally standing on an opponent.

The Australian has been charged with a grade B offence, which carries a ban of one to two matches, for the offence on Huddersfield captain Leroy Cudjoe during his side's 18-10 defeat at St James' Park.

Bird was also given a caution for a similar, but less severe, offence on Huddersfield winger Darnell McIntosh in the same game while Warrington forward Joe Philbin was cautioned for a dangerous tackle on Liam Farrell during his side's 24-24 draw with Wigan.
