Ade Gardner ends association with St Helens to take up Warrington post

Former England winger Ade Gardner has ended a 17-year association with St Helens after being appointed as head of performance at Super League neighbours Warrington.

Gardner, 35, has agreed a two-year deal with the Wolves to take over from Jon Clarke, who left at the end of the season to take up a job with England rugby union.

The former Barrow winger scored 173 tries in 289 appearances in 13 years as a player with Saints, where he won the 2006 Super League Grand Final as well as four Challenge Cup finals, and, after a season with Hull KR in 2014, joined the club's backroom staff as strength and conditioner.

Gardner also played for both Great Britain and England, including at the 2008 World Cup.

Warrington head coach Steve Price said: "Ade had a distinguished playing career and he's been involved in a system that has performed outstandingly well.

"He is highly rated within the St Helens camp; is young, ambitious and bright. He will be a great fit and acquisition for our club."

Saints chief executive Mike Rush said: "He's done a great job here and we're really sad to see him leave.

"He will be a big loss to our backroom team but we couldn't stand in his way. This is a big opportunity for him and we all wish him the best."

Sean O'Loughlin pens new Wigan deal

Wigan skipper Sean O'Loughlin has signed a new contract for 2019 and is to join the club's coaching staff when he finally hangs up his boots.

O'Loughlin, who began playing for the Warriors in 2002 and led them to a fifth Super League Grand Final triumph earlier this month, had fielded an offer from Leeds and allowed the speculation to rumble on by ending the domestic season without resolving his future.

However, the England skipper told reporters at the launch of the Test series with New Zealand eight days ago that he had every intention of seeing out his career with his home-town club and had verbally agreed a new deal.

As well as playing, O'Loughlin, who turns 36 in November, will continue his apprenticeship as a coach by working with the club's academy alongside new head of youth Mick Cassidy in 2019.

O'Loughlin said: "I came to the decision that I'd like to play on and I'm very grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to do so.

"It is no secret that I've always wanted to play for this club, so I'm delighted to be able to extend my career here next season.

"Coaching is a route I have always wanted to go down so I'm also happy to have the opportunity to do so after I've retired."

Wigan executive director Kris Radlinski said: "Sean O'Loughlin is a modern-day great in our sport and is justifiably seen as a legend of Wigan Warriors.

"His influence, professionalism and knowledge are crucial attributes that we were desperate to keep at the club so we are delighted that, despite some handsome offers from big teams in Super League, Sean has put pen to paper to see out his career at the club which he has represented with such distinction.

"The headline news will be Sean's one-year deal to prolong his playing career but we are equally excited to see Sean carve out a coaching career with the Warriors as we help one of our greats prepare for life after rugby."
