Warrington's Rhys Evans hopes to play for Wales

Warrington three-quarter Rhys Evans has put his hands up to play for Wales in the 2017 World Cup.

The 24-year-old winger or centre has not represented his country since the last World Cup in 2013, missing their qualifying campaign through injury, but is hoping to force his way into contention for a place in coach John Kear's squad.

"Massively, I think everyone wants to pull on that jersey, especially in a World Cup abroad," Bridgend-born Evans said.

"It's something I'd love to do. In 2015 I basically had a full year out and I picked up an injury during last season and needed to rest it at the end of the year or I would have had more problems.

"As John has said in the press, I've never guaranteed a position. The lads obviously did very well to qualify, got to wait and see now.

"It's still six months away and at the moment I'm focusing on playing for Warrington but hopefully my form and fitness is good enough to get me selected."

Evans, who is one of only three Warrington ever-presents in the first half of the regular Super League season, is hoping his call-up will be matched by that of his twin brother Ben, with whom he played in the 2013 World Cup.

Prop forward Ben also sat out Wales' qualifying campaign because of injury and left Warrington at the end of the 2016 season but is now kick-starting his career with London Broncos, according to his brother.

"He's going well at the Broncos," said Rhys. "He's enjoying it and getting game time which is what he was after.

"Hopefully if he plays well, he can get selected as well. It was good three or four years ago when we did it and it would be even better to go over there together."

Wales open their World Cup campaign against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on October 28 and also play group games against Ireland and Fiji.
