China Open 2018: Naomi Osaka books semi-final place

US Open champion Naomi Osaka fought back from a set down to end the run of home player Zhang Shuai at the China Open with a 3-6 6-4 7-5 victory and book her place in the semi-finals.

Zhang had defeated Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, the third seed in Beijing, to make the last eight.

Osaka looked to be going the same way after the Chinese player broke twice early in the match and took the opening set 6-3.

However, the Japanese rallied from 0-2 down in the second set to level the match.

Zhang, though, regrouped for the decider and moved 4-1 ahead herself, only for both players to see their serves falter before Osaka seized control to progress after just over two-and-a-half hours on court.

"She's such an incredible player and it was really hard to play against her here," Osaka said following the match, quoted on the WTA website.

Osaka is the first Japanese woman to reach the semi-finals of the China Open since it started in 2004, and will next face Anastasija Sevastova.

The Latvian, 20, defeated veteran Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 (7/5).

The other semi-final will see number world number two Caroline Wozniacki take on home favourite Wang Qiang.

Dane Wozniacki beat Czech player Katerina Siniakova 6-2 6-2.

In Friday's late match, Wang delighted the home crowd as she saw off the challenge of world number 16 Aryna Sabalenka, winning 7-5 7-5.
