Hyeon Chung has pulled out of the French Open after undergoing tests on an ankle injury, it has been revealed.
The South Korean said a buildup of fluid on his ankle could require surgery and an "extended period of rest".
Ranked number 20 in the world, the 22-year-old missed the Lyon Open with the complaint that has blighted his clay campaign.
Chung announced he was withdrawing from Roland Garros in a statement posted on his Twitter page.
It said: "Unfortunately I had to withdraw from Lyon yesterday and now Roland Garros.
"I have been struggling with an ankle injury during the entire clay season.
"An MRI scan has revealed that I have a buildup of fluid in the ankle joint which might require a small procedure and then an extended period of rest.
"Thanks to everyone for all the support. Hope to see you soon and be back to full strength!"
Chung's grand slam breakthrough came when he reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January.
He lost in the Munich Open semi-finals to Alexander Zverev earlier this month before being knocked out of the Madrid Open in the first round by Robin Haase.
