Zanndabad wins for Tony Martin | Newcastle review

Zanndabad (10/3) produced an imperious performance as he went one better in the Weatherbys And Birdie Calendars 'The French Furze' Novices' Hurdle than when second to Skyjack Hijack in the race 12 months ago.

The field was closely bunched before the turn for home as Lost Frequencies led them in, but Zanndabad was always moving strongly in behind and moved through to challenge Spreadsheet Guru two from home.

After hitting the front, Zanndabad made a hash of the last, but his nearest rival did similar, and the Tony Martin-trained six-year-old was able to cruise clear up the run-in under Daniel King.

Spreadsheet Guru (9/1) was eventually beaten by six and a half lengths, just holding onto second from the fast-finishing 15/8 favourite Just Golden who got going too late in the day.

Rehearsal romp for Konfusion despite final fence mishap

Konfusion (3/1) was given a positive ride - and, on a day of jumping errors, survived a bad error at the last - as he landed an attritional renewal of the BetMGM Rehearsal Handicap Chase.

At a gloomy Gosforth Park, the bright colours of Konfusion were a useful tool in the early stages for the commentator, as the mount of Callum Bewley set the pace along with Docpickedme and Hold That Taught.

The well-backed 2/1 favourite Jasmin De Grugy was held up off the pace and produced a couple of sloppy jumps whilst Konfusion and Docpickedme put several lengths between themselves and the rest of the field.

Deafening Silence and Cruz Control closed up five out but the first two continued to pile on the pressure and it was the Joel Parkinson & Sue Smith-trained Konfusion who came well clear two fences from home and was able to afford a very sloppy jump at the last.

Unlike when unseating his rider at Haydock last weekend, Konfusion survived that error, received a pat down the neck from his rider, and finished 15 lengths clear of Deafening Silence (6/1) and Docpickedme who held on for third (9/1).
