Aaron Rodgers: Green Bay Packers QB handed record NFL deal

The Green Bay Packers will hand quarterback Aaron Rodgers the biggest contract in NFL history after agreeing on a four-year extension that could eventually be worth $180m.

The 34-year-old has agreed on a four-year contract that is reportedly worth an initial $134 million but could rise up to an eye-watering $180m with incentives.

Equally as mind-boggling is the signing bonus scheme being reported that will see two-time MVP Rodgers handed a record lump sum and secondary payment that will total $80m by next March.

A guaranteed $103m across the contract is another record amount while his average annual salary of $33.5m will make him the highest paid player in the NFL after eclipsing Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan’s new contract signed in May.

Rodgers returns for his 14th NFL season after missing nine games last year with a shoulder injury, as his importance to the team was highlighted with the Packers finishing with a 7-9 record.

As one of the best QBs in the league, Rodgers instantly makes the Packers a play-off contender having previously led them to a Super Bowl title, where he won the MVP award for the game.

Rodgers is 94-48 as a starter and has piled up 38,502 passing yards with 313 touchdowns and just 78 interceptions – a ratio which is the best in NFL history.

Green Bay take on their NFC North rivals the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field in their first game of the new season on September 9.
