World Cup 2018: Latest odds for the Golden Boot in Russia

Harry Kane is 5/1 second favourite for the Golden Boot after matching Romelu Lukaku's brace, but who else could challenge Cristiano Ronaldo for the title?

Ronaldo is the clear 9/4 favourite after his hat-trick against Spain, but can anybody catch him? Billy Cundall looks at the contenders hoping to steal the award from Ronaldo’s grip…

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his opener on Friday night

Harry Kane 5/1

The captain came good right at the death and showed why he England's main man in Russia. Gareth Southgate's men showed real promise in creating a hatful of chances against Tunisia, and that'll give punters hope that Kane can fill his boots against Panama in their second game. Kane wont be scared of facing Belgium either so could have added two or three to his tally before the knockout stages.

Diego Costa – 7/1

Diego Costa seemed to finally find his international mojo on Friday night after he helped Spain to a hard-fought 3-3 draw with Portugal. The Brazilian-born Spaniard has struggled to find form with the Spanish national side, and saw his place in the starting XI thrown into jeopardy after a dismal display four years ago in Brazil, when the then reigning champions crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage. But Friday night seemed to be a rebirth for the Atletico Madrid striker, who bagged a brace in bullish fashion. Costa has both Morocco and Iran to play against in the final two group games, which could be the perfect opportunity for the 29-year-old to make the ground up on Ronaldo.

Romelu Lukaku - 9/1

A great start for the Manchester United man as Belgium cruised to a 3-0 win over Panama. He'll fancy adding a couple more against Tunisia given how England tore them apart early on, while he's scored enough Premier League goals not to be scared of facing an English defence. He could go close as long as Belgium hold their nerve in the knockout rounds.

Neymar – 16/1

An almost anticlimactic opening Brazil game saw Neymar being relentlessly hacked to the ground by a well-organised Switzerland side. The PSG forward was handled well by Valon Behrami, and drew some criticism for his mediocre performance which saw him take all set-pieces despite calls for Coutinho to chance his arm. All in all it was a frustrating night for the most expensive player on the planet, but he is just returning from a long-term injury and there is plenty of football to come.

Antoine Griezmann – 18/1

Sticking with underwhelming opening performances, another man who endured a fairly average first display was France’s Antoine Griezmann. The striker had to settle for a goal via the penalty spot before being withdrawn from the game when France were clearly chasing the winner. Last week’s surreal ‘La Decision’ did no good for his popularity with the Frenchman alienating both his own Atleti fans as well as those at Barcelona. Perhaps the backlash from the video affected his pre-match mind-set, but there was certainly nothing to rave about in Griezmann’s performance. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old did get on the scoresheet and has put himself well in the running for the Golden Boot award.

Lionel Messi - 22/1

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered perhaps the most frustrating opening game of all on Saturday. His top-heavy Argentina side endured a defensively stubborn Iceland side that earned a fantastic point. Messi was constantly thwarted and often double and even tripled marked, yet Argentina couldn’t seem to exploit the open space he left. Adding insult to injury, the Barcelona striker missed a penalty that consequently cost the Argentines all three points. He is, however, still one of the best footballers on the planet and has the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck, and so he cannot be ruled out of this award.

Sergio Aguero - 20/1

After getting the nod over Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero took full advantage of his chance by opening his campaign with a goal. The Manchester City striker powered home a forceful strike to give Argentina the lead in what ended as a frustrating afternoon for the Argentines. Aguero consistently scores goals in every competition, and the World Cup appears to be no different. Considering how clinical the 30-year-old can be, there is certainly a good chance of him bagging more this summer.
