John Sheridan has quit as manager of Sky Bet League Two side Carlisle and is now expected to take the reins at National League side Chesterfield.
The 54-year-old is odds-on to take over as manager of the Spireites, who sacked manager Martin Allen in December.
The former Republic of Ireland international has previously managed Chesterfield, leading them to the League Two title during his time at the club between 2009 and 2012.
Sherdian only joined Carlisle seven months ago and has guided the club to seventh in Sky Bet League Two, in the play offs on goal difference.
If he does move to Chesterfield he will be swapping a promotion push for a relegation dog fight. The Spireities are currently in the National League's fourth and final relegation place, one point from safety.
Assistant first team manager Tommy Wright and first team coach Paul Murray will now take charge of Carlisle's League Two match against third placed Mansfield on Saturday.
Carlisle Chairman Andrew Jenkins said: "In his short time at United, John has made a positive difference to the club. He has improved the style of football and assembled a squad that is able to compete with the best teams in the League Two.
"The request to leave came from John. Over the last few days, the board and John had discussed football squad matters, and these were being resolved. I would like to thank him for his commitment, and we all wish him the best of luck for the future."
