Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool: Records, statistics and milestones from the 2018 Champions League final


Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo entered the record books in Kiev but it was yet another final defeat for Jurgen Klopp.

Substitute Gareth Bale scored a stunning overhead kick on a night to forget for Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius as Real Madrid claimed a record third straight Champions League title.

Real Madrid landmarks

  • Real Madrid become the first team to win the European Cup/Champions League in three successive seasons since Bayern Munich between 1974 and 1976.
  • They had already appeared in more finals and won the trophy more than anyone else before tonight but they now extend those records to 16 and 13 respectively.

  • Real Madrid have won four of the last five finals, with Barcelona lifting the trophy in 2015, meaning the European Cup has been in Spanish hands since Bayern Munich beat Dortmund in 2013.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo is now the most successful Champions League player in history having now lifted the trophy five times.
  • The Portuguese star, who is one European Cup behind Francisco Gento and level with nine other players who won it at least once before the age of the Champions League, also extended his record of match wins, which now stands at 100.
  • Zinedine Zidane is just the third manager to win the European Cup/Champions League three times (after Bob Paisley and Carlo Ancelotti), but the first to win it in three consecutive seasons.
  • Real Madrid started with the same XI as in the 2016-17 Champions League final; the first time a team has started with the same 11 players in different European Cup/Champions League finals (excl. replays).
  • Gareth Bale scored just two minutes and two seconds after coming off the bench. It was the second-fastest ever by a substitute in a Champions League final, after Lars Ricken for Borussia Dortmund against Juventus in 1997.
  • Gareth Bale is the first player ever to come on as a substitute and score twice in a European Cup/ Champions League final.
  • Bale is also only the second British player to score a brace in a European Cup/Champions League final after Bobby Charlton for Manchester United in 1968.
  • Karim Benzema has scored four goals against Liverpool in the Champions League; no player has managed more (also four for Didier Drogba).

Liverpool, Klopp and English football records

  • English teams have suffered a defeat in their last seven UEFA club competition finals against Spanish opposition (4 x Champions League Finals, 3 x UEFA Cup/Europa League finals).
  • Jurgen Klopp has now lost six of his seven major finals as manager (2 x DFB-Pokal, 2 x Champions League, 1 x League Cup, 1 x UEFA Europa League), only winning the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund in 2012.

Real Madrid's 13 European Cups

1955-56 v Stade de Reims, Paris - W 4-3

Hector Rial scored twice and Alfredo Di Stefano once as Real responded from two goals down after 10 minutes and 3-2 down with 28 minutes to go to win the inaugural European Cup.

1956-57 v Fiorentina, Madrid - W 2-0

A controversial Di Stefano goal - featuring an ignored offside flag and a penalty for a foul committed outside the area - and one from Francisco Gento saw Real successfully defend the European Cup.

1957-58 v AC Milan, Brussels - W 3-2 after extra-time

Three finals, three wins for Real, but this one was hard fought as they twice came from behind before Gento struck the winner in extra-time.

1958-59 v Stade de Reims, Stuttgart - W 2-0

A dominant performance against familiar opponents as Real won with goals from Enrique Mateos and Di Stefano, who scored in a fourth straight final.

1959-60 v Eintracht Frankfurt, Glasgow - W 7-3

Another final and a fifth Real win, with Di Stefano scoring a hat-trick and Hungary's Ferenc Puskas four goals in front of a crowd of 127,621 at Hampden Park.

1965-66 v Partizan, Brussels - W 2-1

Five straight wins were followed by an absence of five years, but a new-look Real triumphed, coming from behind with goals from Amancio Amaro and Fernando Serena securing a sixth title.

1997-98 v Juventus, Amsterdam - W 1-0

In their first final of the Champions League era, Real ended a 32-year wait for the trophy as Predrag Mijatovic's second-half goal earned victory over Juventus.

1999-00 v Valencia, Paris - W 3-0

Goals from Fernando Morientes, Steve McManaman and Raul saw Real coast to victory over compatriots Valencia, who were surprise final opponents.

2001-02 v Bayer Leverkusen, Glasgow - W 2-1

A return to Hampden and a ninth European Cup win, courtesy of goals from Raul and Zinedine Zidane, who struck a sumptuous volley.

2013-14 v Atletico Madrid, Lisbon - W 4-1 (after extra-time)

Real earned La Decima, a 10th European Cup, in dramatic circumstances as Sergio Ramos' stoppage-time strike forced extra-time and knocked the stuffing out of Atletico, who conceded three more.

2015-16 v Atletico Madrid, Milan - W 5-3 on penalties (1-1 after extra-time)

Another Madrid derby in the final and another close contest as Ramos' goal was cancelled out by Yannick Carrasco before Real were unerring from the penalty spot and Juanfran missed his for Atletico.

2016-17 v Juventus, Cardiff - W 4-1

It was two in a row for coach Zidane as Real responded emphatically from going a goal down, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, while Casemiro and Marco Asensio were also on target.

20117-18 v Liverpool, Kiev - W 3-1

Substitute Gareth Bale scored a stunning overhead kick and a long-range second as Real Madrid claimed their third straight Champions League title, but Liverpool's 3-1 defeat owed just as much to two howling errors from goalkeeper Loris Karius.
