Charlton 0-1 Preston report & highlights: Paul Gallagher's penalty puts Preston top of the table

Paul Gallagher's second-half penalty saw Preston North End move to the top of the Sky Bet Championship with a 1-0 win over Charlton at the Valley.

The narrow victory was enough to see Preston move above Leeds into top spot in the Sky Bet Championship on goal difference, but West Brom have the chance to replace them on Monday night against Stoke.

All the pre-match talk was taken over by the future of North End boss Alex Neil, with the club reporting Stoke to the EFL for an illegal approach after they looked into getting him in to replace Nathan Jones.

It was a pretty even contest in terms of possession, but Preston created the better chances and had twice as many shots as the home side - who have had the second-fewest shots in the division.

However, it took a disputed penalty to make the difference with defender Jason Pearce adjudged to have fouled Jayden Stockley for the spot-kick.

First-half substitute Gallagher took it, in his own unique style as he lined up facing the wrong way before walking back and instantly turning to rifle the ball beyond Dillon Phillips.

Charlton keeper Phillips then made a number of saves late on to deny Preston a second, but the three points were enough to see them move above Leeds to the Championship summit.
