Sky Bet Championship: Seven contenders to finish as top goalscorer

The Sky Bet Championship returns on Friday, EFL expert Tom Carnduff looks through the candidates to finish top of the scoring charts.

A successful side in this division often has a prolific forward leading the line, and the top goalscorer market provides some great value in the betting.

The magical 20-goal mark is the aim for those who line up in the advanced positions - it was Derby's Matej Vydra with 21 last term - whilst 25 goals usually wraps up the award for whoever smashes that target.

EFL title sponsor Sky Bet are offering four places instead of three (1/5 the odds) on all outright winner bets placed until August 4 and they also have a number of daily EFL price boosts lined up for those looking for pre-season coupons.

The transfer window will shut on August 9 this year, rather than the end of the month, which sees a lot of clubs moving to wrap up deals for strikers much sooner than we have seen in the past.

The usual suspects find themselves leading the way as favourites, although previous seasons have highlighted how those who may be unfancied are more than capable of causing an upset.

Tom Carnduff looks at some of the top goalscorer candidates.

Benik Afobe (Stoke)

Benik Afobe is the bookies' favourite to be the top goalscorer in the Sky Bet Championship

The subject of one of the more bizarre transfer sagas this summer, Benik Afobe now finds himself at Stoke looking to fire them back into the Premier League.

The 25-year-old turned his loan move from Bournemouth into a permanent one when he signed for Wolves this summer. During his half season there, he fired in six goals in 16 games to help them to the Championship title.

Interestingly, days after completing the switch, he was shipped off to the Potters on a temporary basis, with the obligation to buy during the January transfer window.

Wolves' loss is Stoke's massive gain, as he is a striker with a track record of scoring goals at this level.

During the 2015/16 campaign, again with Wolves, he scored 13 goals in 21 appearances, following it up with nine goals the following season before leaving for Bournemouth midway through the campaign.

Afobe is a 20-goal a season striker in a Stoke side who will expect to be at the top of the table come May.

He will be surrounded by top talent such as James McClean and Tom Ince who should provide plenty of opportunity for goals, and a finisher of his calibre will not miss too many of the chances presented to him.

He is rightfully favourite for the top scorer title, and should be sitting towards the top of the charts by the end of the season.

Sky Bet top goalscorer odds: 8/1

Lewis Grabban (Nottingham Forest)

Lewis Grabban has made the switch to Nottingham Forest

Grabban narrowly missed out on finishing top of the scoring charts last time out with prolific loan spells at Sunderland and Aston Villa.

He has since completed a permanent switch from AFC Bournemouth for a bargain £6m and leads the line in a Nottingham Forest outfit who are fancied for glory in our Sky Bet Championship betting preview.

Grabban is no one-season wonder either. The Forest man averages a goal every 163 minutes in the Championship, and going on that average, you would be looking at another season with 22/23 goals.

Like Afobe, the striker will be surrounded by quality players who can create plenty of chances for him to strike.

If he can do it in a team who struggled, before eventually being relegated, then logic dictates that he will be able to continue that form into the new season with a team who will perform considerably better.

Sky Bet top goalscorer odds: 14/1

Britt Assombalonga (Middlesbrough)

Britt Assombalonga in action for Middlesbrough

Another recognisable face for many fans in the Championship, Britt Assombalonga will be the man who Middlesbrough will be hoping can return them to the top flight.

Like Grabban, he is a player who has a great track record in this division. Remarkably, him and Grabban's average minutes-per-goal is separated by one, with Assombalonga scoring every 164 minutes.

He has scored a combined 29 goals over the last two seasons, with 15 goals also coming in the 2014/15 season before injury disrupted his efforts in 2016.

You know he is capable of hitting around the 15-goal mark every season, and the question is now whether he can now push on and add the extras that can fire him into serious contention.

Almost like a game show, 15 goals is safe, it is whether he can gamble and finish the season and earn the top scorer title for the first time in his career.

Either way, Assombalonga has the track record to prove he is a striker that most teams in this division desire.

Sky Bet top goalscorer odds: 12/1

Jack Marriott (Derby County)

Jack Marriott has joined Derby this summer

Derby have significantly strengthened the attacking options that Frank Lampard will have with the addition of Peterborough's Jack Marriott.

He was a star for Posh in Sky Bet League One, scoring 33 goals in all competitions in a team that did not even reach the top six.

In a deal that has been reported around the £6.5m mark, the value that the Rams are getting looks outstanding in the modern transfer market.

The player is in-form, and signing for a Derby side who were not quite able to put our finger on where exactly they will finish in the table come May.

Based on what we have seen from him, he has no intention of seeing the goals dry up. It is Marriott's debut season at this level, although there are no doubts about his goalscoring ability.

He has already proven what he can do in League One and League Two - and the sky seems the limit for one of the most prolific strikers in English football last season.

Sky Bet top goalscorer odds: 22/1

Patrick Bamford (Leeds)

Patrick Bamford has signed for Leeds

Leeds United have been crying out for a striker since Chris Wood's departure for Burnley last summer, and they now have someone who can find the net in this division.

The reported £7m fee being paid upfront for him by the Whites shows their intention to bring in someone who can provide them with much-needed firepower.

As discussed with Grabban and Assombalonga, he averages a goal roughly every two games and comes into a Leeds side who will be intent on attacking under Marcelo Bielsa.

Last season saw him score 13 goals in all competitions, but game time was hard to come by during the first half of the campaign.

A managerial change in December saw Bamford used more during the second part of the season, scoring 10 goals from mid-February onwards which helped to fire Boro into the play-offs.

A fresh start at Leeds, where he will be the main man, will continue to see the goals coming in. Bamford will be looking to replicate his form in 2014/15 which saw him score 19 goals during the course of the season.

Sky Bet top goalscorer odds: 20/1

Louis Moult (Preston)

Louis Moult in action for Preston

Jordan Hugill was the prolific man for Preston at the beginning of last season, and Louis Moult will be hopeful that he can replicate that form this time around.

The 26-year-old joined North End from Motherwell in January, scoring two goals in 10 appearances as he adjusted to life in England's second tier.

He will be battling Sean Maguire for the goals at Preston, with both fancied to find the net when required as the club look to go one step further having narrowly missed out on the play-offs in May.

Although both will want a starring role, Moult believes they can become a deadly duo, telling the Lancashire Post: "We are two different types of player but we complement each other as well when we play together. It is good for the manager to have selection headaches."

He's had a full pre-season behind him, which has prevented him in the past two summers at Motherwell, and that will help him prepare for the season to start at the beginning of August.

In fact, Maguire's thigh injury means Moult will lead the line against QPR, presenting him with a real opportunity to stake a claim as North End's main man for the rest of the campaign.

Moult comes with a good record from Scotland, scoring a goal every two games on average. The back-end of last season will have been ideal preparation for this campaign, where he will be eager to establish himself as a top striker in this division.

Sky Bet top goalscorer odds: 100/1

Ben Brereton (Nottingham Forest)

Forest striker Ben Brereton has found the net despite his young age

Despite being just 18 last season, Ben Brereton struck six times for a Nottingham Forest side who found themselves in the bottom half of the Championship table.

He is the wildcard selection here, but he is someone who could have a massive season in Aitor Karanka's team.

Brereton has also enjoyed positive spells with England at youth team levels, scoring four goals at the last two European U19 Championships.

Whilst Grabban will be fancied for the goals, the focus that defenders will have to give last season's Golden Boot runner-up should present the youngster with opportunities to strike - he is someone who has proven he knows where the net is.

If Forest have a good season, as expected, then Brereton should continue to see his performances improve, and with some momentum, this season may see him upset the odds when it comes to goalscoring.

He is a good, technical footballer with an eye for goal. It would not surprise me in the slightest to see him linked with a move to the Premier League in January - if, as expected, he has a great first half of the campaign.

With the forward around the 150/1 mark, each-way terms present great value on him coming in the top four.
