Widnes mourn death of Mick Adams aged 65

Widnes have announced the death of former captain and Great Britain international Mick Adams at the age of 65.

Adams, a loose forward, made 415 appearances for his home-town club from 1971-84 and was a member of the team that became known as the Cup kings after helping them reach 25 finals in that time.

He played in four Challenge Cup finals at Wembley and led the Chemics to victory over Hull in the 1982 Cup final replay.

Adams also spent two seasons in Australia with Canterbury Bankstown from 1975-76 and won 13 caps with Great Britain, including the tours of 1979 and 1984, and played for England in the 1975 World Cup.

In 1992, Adams was inducted into Widnes' hall of fame.

In a statement, Widnes said: "The club would like to pass on their sincere condolences to Mick's family and friends at this time."

The club have called for a minute's applause before Sunday's home game against Castleford as a mark of respect for Adams, who they say passed away overnight.
