Danny Richardson commits to Saints for three more seasons

St Helens' promising half-back Danny Richardson has agreed a new three-year contract with the club.

The 21-year-old, who proved to be an outstanding replacement for former England scrum-half Matty Smith this season, has committed his future to the Saints until the end of the 2020 season, with the option of a further year.

"Danny has had a good year with the club and I'm pleased he has agreed a new contract," said St Helens coach Justin Holbrook.

"He took his opportunity with both hands after impressing at both academy and reserve level.

"We're looking forward to seeing him improve over the next few years as he has a big future in the game."

Richardson made his debut in the opening game of the Super League season against Leeds in February in the absence of Smith with a broken leg and also stepped in when the former Wigan and Salford man was sidelined with an eye injury in mid-season.

He played well enough to keep Smith out of the side during the Super 8s, taking his number of appearances to 12 before being left out of the team that lost last Thursday's semi-final to Castleford.

"It's an honour to sign a new contract with the club I call home," Richardson said. "I'm looking forward to developing as a player and winning silverware with the Saints.

"Since making my debut, the coaching staff, players and fans have been very supportive and I cannot wait to repay them for their faith."
