Racing betting tips: Friday October 9

15:30 Newmarket - Old Rowley Cup Handicap 1m4f
Turty Tree beat a few of these at Ascot last month but may struggle to confirm form at the revised weights, especially with ARCHERS BAY, who bettered his close third there when second in the Listed Godolphin Stakes over C&D last time.
The winner of that, Fortitudine, had the run of things but looks potentially top class, and Archers Bay emerges with great credit; the handicapper has raised him 5lb for that effort, but he is able to run off his old mark as this is an early-closing contest, and his claims are crystal clear.
17:20 Newmarket - HKJC World Pool Handicap 7f
We had a bit of trouble choosing between Lunario and WAISTCOAT as the each-way value here, but have settled on the latter, who is trained by the talented Ross Burdon and looks capable of a bold show back at seven furlongs. The 5-y-o made late headway over 6f here last time but essentially struggled to match his rivals for pace that day and looks ready for another crack at 7f, over which he has yet to win, but has been placed on his last three attempts, showing gradually progressive form in the process.
Waistcoat’s best effort this season came when winning a strongly run 6f handicap at Newbury in the summer, when he was notably strong at the finish and we believe that the increased emphasis on stamina here compared to his last couple of runs will enable him to get amongst them again.
13:30 York - 1m Handicap
Beagle Bay, despite top weight, still looks in front of the handicapper but hasn’t been seen since June. He’s been ready to run, taken on twice on account of the ground, and it is interesting to note he has other entries, including in the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot next week.
Spoken Truth will be hard to kick out of the frame from an inside draw, but maybe this is the time to jump aboard Mirsky, who was second to Spoken Truth at Ripon two starts ago and looked like he was on the way back to form.
The 7f at Leopardstown last time simply wasn’t enough of a test but this looks more suitable, and he’ll get a nice tow into the race from Salam Dubawi, the likely leader and who is drawn next door to him. If he drifts any bigger than his current 25/1, we would consider him worth a half point each-way.
If a wide draw doesn’t spoil his chance then Inspired could bounce back after a lacklustre effort at Doncaster. That was a third quick run and it probably just told on him, so after a short break, this C&D winner with form on soft ground could very easily get back on track.
15:12 Chepstow - 2m Welsh Champion Hurdle
It’s hard to see why MORNING MAYHEM is still such a big price, given he’s barely run a poor race all summer. Fourth in the Summer Hurdle behind High Fibre, he patently didn’t stay 2m5½f at Newton Abbot next time but bounced straight back with a ready win at Cartmel and gave the well-touted and well-handicapped Un Sens A La Vie a scare at Market Rasen a fortnight ago.
This is a bit tougher again, but all the same, he’s thriving and has a fitness edge on a few of those at shorter odds, so makes plenty of appeal.
16:25 York - 5f Handicap
This has the look of an absolute burn-up looking at the pace map, and we should be looking for something to come from off the pace. Drawn 1 is hold-up merchant BOSTON DAN, who looked right back to form when winning easily on heavy ground at Haydock last month. He found the Bronze Cup a bit too competitive on his next start and can have a line put through his Haydock run last time out, one of two that raced away from the rest and disadvantaged by that tactic. Assuming a low draw is advantageous - always a slightly dangerous assumption at this time of year - then expect to see him finishing strongly on the far side.
