15:00 Hereford – Class 4 (0-115) Handicap Chase 2m8y

Heavy ground means Passing Kate will be interesting, and while she has her limitations, she is very capable at this level when the mud is flying. Her full record on ground with heavy in the going description is 5121P22, improving to 112 at two miles over jumps, and she merits a bet for all she’s not the only mudlark in the field.

Passing Kate last had heavy ground when a very good second to Jour D’Evasion at Bangor in November and that form has been franked by the winner, who has added another two wins to his impressive CV since getting the better of the selection at the North Wales venue. He beat Passing Kate again at Chepstow last month before taking on better rivals at Warwick recently. For her part, Passing Kate again ran well at Exeter last time, but was stretched by the trip in the race won by Bonza Boy. Despite her previous form working out well, the handicapper has seen fit to drop her for her three efforts this winter and she arrives at Hereford looking nicely handicapped and with the bare 2m firmly in her favour. We'd have her a lot shorter than she is this morning, and represents great value.

15:30 Hereford – Class 3 (0-130) Handicap Hurdle 2m53y

Latin Verse makes plenty of appeal starting out for Olly Murphy. Formerly with Anthony Charlton, he was las seen falling at the last flight at Taunton when just a length behind leader Saint Anapolino, which represented a return to form for a horse who has shown a marked preference for racing right-handed with give in the ground.

An impressive winner at Ludlow before being backed for the Fred Winter as a juvenile, he ploughed through the mud to win but couldn’t cope with the combination of the track and quicker ground at Cheltenham. His record right-handed over hurdles reads 22210F, with his only poor run coming under hold-up tactics at Wincanton a year ago. The switch to Murphy looks a big positive, and he’s easing back to a mark he can do some damage off.
