WTA review: Maria Sharapova books place in last eight of Tianjin Open

Maria Sharapova reached her second WTA Tour quarter-final since her doping ban at the Tianjin Open.

The Russian made a fine start to her comeback in Stuttgart in April by making the semi-finals but had fallen short of the last eight at each event since.

However, she has been in decent form in China and was a 7-5 6-3 winner against Magda Linette in the second round in Tianjin.

In the quarter-finals Sharapova, now Sky Bet's 11/10 favourite, will face Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele, who defeated fifth seed Yulia Putintseva 6-2 6-3.

Italian qualifier Sara Errani continued her winning run on her own comeback from a two-month doping ban, beating Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Third seed and defending champion Peng Shuai eased into the last eight with a 6-2 6-2 win over Wang Xiyu while Christina McHale upset sixth seed Maria Sakkari 6-0 6-4.

None of the top five seeds at the Hong Kong Open have reached the quarter-finals, with Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki both withdrawing through injury on Thursday.

Top seed Svitolina is suffering from a leg injury and gave Nicole Gibbs (9/1) a walkover while defending champion Wozniacki, who had been due to play Lizette Cabrera (50/1), cited an elbow problem for her withdrawal.

Two singles matches were played - Jennifer Brady (6/1) upset eighth seed Zhang Shuai 6-3 6-4 while Wang Qiang (6/1) defeated Luksika Kumkhum 6-4 6-4.

Daria Gavrilova is Sky Bet's 2/1 favourite to win the event, with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova second favourite at 9/2.

At the Linz Open in Austria, second seed Barbora Strycova had to come from behind to reach the quarter-finals.

The Czech dropped the first set to Croatia's Jana Fett but managed to run out a 2-6 6-3 6-3 winner.

Top-ranked Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia was also made to battle on her way to a 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 victory over Germany's Carina Witthoeft.

Fifth seed Sorana Cirstea, of Romania, won an epic first-set tie-break 16-14 and took the second set 6-4 to get past Russia's Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic needed three sets to beat Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova while Sweden's Johanna Larsson breezed past American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2 6-3.
