Angelique Kerber to play in Aegon International at Eastbourne

World number one Angelique Kerber has accepted a wild card into this month's Aegon International, a decision which means seven of the world's top 10 WTA players will be in Eastbourne.

The German has been struggling for form of late and it seems she is looking to get plenty of match practice under her belt. She is also due to play in Birmingham next week.

Last year's Wimbledon runner-up has twice been a finalist at Devonshire Park (in 2012 and 2014) and is relishing a return to the Sussex venue.

"Eastbourne is a tournament I’ve loved playing over the years," said the reigning US Open champion.

"The courts are world class and the fans are wonderful, so I’m very excited to get back there and get back playing on the grass."

Briton Johanna Konta and world number three Karolina Pliskova, who could potentially claim Kerber's top ranking in the coming weeks, are among the other top-10 stars due to compete.

Meanwhile, Gael Monfils has been handed a wild card into the men's draw which takes place alongside the WTA one.

The tournament takes place from June 25 to July 1, finishing just two days before Wimbledon begins.
