Ladies Open Biel Bienne: Camila Giorgi produces upset

Camila Giorgi produced the standout result of the day at the Ladies Open Biel Bienne by upsetting second seed Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round.

The Italian (pictured) has slumped to 98 in the rankings from a high of 30 in 2015 and arrived in Switzerland without a tour-level win since January.

But it was Giorgi who proved stronger in the end against world number 23 Suarez Navarro, winning 2-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 to set up a last-eight meeting with Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Top seed Barbora Strycova avoided Suarez Navarro's fate, although she had to save two set points in the second set against Carina Witthoeft before winning 6-2 7-6 (8/6).

Czech 17-year-old Marketa Vondrousova reached the first WTA Tour quarter-final of her career with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Germany's Annika Beck.

On the clay at the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogota, former French Open winner, Francesca Schiavone continued her impressive run by beating top seed Kiki Bertens to reach the semi-finals.

The 36-year-old Italian, down at 168th in the world, needed only an hour and 15 minutes to secure a 6-4 6-1 victory over the player ranked 148 places higher.

Earlier on Thursday, Holland's Bertens had beaten compatriot Cindy Burger 6-2 7-5 in the last 16, but she was outclassed by wildcard Schiavone.

Schiavone will face Swedish third seed Johanna Larsson in the last four after she saw off Sara Errani 7-5 6-4, while Spanish pair Lara Arruabarrena and Sara Sorribes Tormo meet in the other semi-final after both progressed in three sets.
