ATP Tour: Mirza Basic wins Sofia Open


Bosnian qualifier Mirza Basic won the Sofia Open to claim his first ATP Tour title following a thrilling victory against Marius Copil on Sunday.

Basic, who sensationally knocked out top seed Stan Wawrinka in the last four, overcame a determined Copli to win 7-6 (8/6) 6-7 (7/4) 6-4 in two hours and 21 minutes.

Basic, competing in his first final at this level, is only the second Bosnian to win an ATP title after Damir Dzumhur triumphed in St Petersburg last September.

The 26-year-old is projected to move more than 50 places from his current world ranking of 129 to 76 on Monday.

Elsewhere, Lucas Pouille beat Richard Gasquet to win the Open Sud de France in Montpellier.

Pouille, who saved two match points in his semi-final against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Saturday, needed just 87 minutes to despatch of Gasquet in the all-French encounter.

The 23-year-old sealed a commanding 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 victory to claim his fifth tour title.

Spanish qualifier Roberto Carballes Baena completed a fairytale week to win his first ATP World Tour trophy at the Ecuador Open.

The world number 107 dropped the second set against countryman and second seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas, but came through to win 6-3 4-6 6-4 in a showpiece which lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours.
