Alex Payne's RBS 6 Nations preview and predictions

Sky Sports presenter Alex Payne casts his eye over the penultimate round of games in the RBS 6 Nations.

Wales v Ireland (Friday 2005GMT)

This is the game that makes or breaks both campaigns, there is so much riding on it from a national and Lions perspective. And recent meetings have been tight - 3 wins apiece and a draw in the last seven fixtures.

Wales have been through two weeks of soul searching and have promised an emotional backlash. But Ireland are a canny side at the moment. Joe Schmidt is the man with a plan, and having dropped the ball at Murrayfield, I don't think those in green will do so again.

Ireland to win by 1-5 at 9/2 to keep the showdown with England alive for next weekend.

Henshaw heroics - I'm surprised that Robbie Henshaw has only grabbed two tries in his 27 tests so far. Both were notable scores - the winning try against England in 2015 and the deal sealer against the All Blacks last October. Ireland need another big performance on Friday, and at 9/2 for an anytime try Henshaw may well be the man to deliver.

North star - he's been much maligned since his defensive wobbles against the Scots, but George North will expect to bounce back. He has scored 16 tries against Six Nations opponents, but only one of them has come against Ireland. 12/1 says North finds his way over for the first try on Friday night.

I'm always surprised by the animosity between these two so it is worth considering the red card at 8/1.

England v Scotland (Saturday 1600)

What a game in store. The facts and stats have been flying around all week. England are looking to equal the world record for consecutive wins. Scotland joyless at Twickenham since 1983; no member of either squad was alive on that day. But the Scots are buzzing, England are bristling. This is what it's all about.

At the start of the tournament, I put a pound on Scotland for the title at 20/1, but had them to lose at Twickenham. And in the shake up I'm sticking with that. England have not been great, but they're very hard to beat. And history weighs heavily against Scotland.

They have managed only six away wins in 44 attempts in the Six Nations, and I fear they might misfire as they did in Paris. England still have a big performance in them, and I think they should have too much power. England to win by 6-10 at 5/1.

Scotland sharp start - Hogg and Seymour are obvious plays but I fancy a fast Scottish start. England have been very slow out of the traps of late, conceding the first try in their last four games. Scotland are sure to be fully on edge and a tartan try for first score is 7/1.

England, in contrast, are finishing strongly, and I like the lurking Anthony Watson on the bench for the last try at 9/1.

Owen Farrell's full house - there may be injury doubts but if he does play expect a big show; he will be the first to admit his performance against Italy will not be first on the showreel. He's 25/1 to respond with the full house of try, drop goal, conversion and penalty.

Italy v France (Saturday 1330)

Conor O'Shea promised more tricks up the sleeve after 'Ruckgate' - it will be fascinating to see what he can produce. The furore around their exploitation of the laws rather masked the fact that England still posted six tries, blew countless points off the kicking tee and generally meandered around in mediocrity.

France are far from the real deal, but have posted some big scores on the Italians and may well get up a head of steam in the Rome sunshine. France to beat the 18-point start at evens.

French flyer - Les Bleus have managed just two tries so far in their three games but it is a fantastic backline on paper. Noa Nakaitaci is a solid option, Louis Picamoles is their form player but I like Brice Dulin at 15. He has been recalled after injury and brings real invention from the back. Dulin is 9/4 to cross for an anytime try.

Italian Stallion - A nod to Sergio Parisse, who can't have too many more days as Italian captain. If this is his farewell to the Stadio Olimpico, bet on a 'Ciao' try at 11/2. Also stick with Michele Campagnaro, who delivered a stunner against England.
