Super League review: St Helens beat Catalans Dragons 50-14 in home romp

A review of Sunday's action in the Betfred Super League, as leaders St Helens crushed Catalans Dragons 50-14.

Sunday's Super League results

  • Hull 30-12 Wakefield
  • Leeds 28-24 Hull KR
  • St Helens 50-14 Catalans Dragons
  • Warrington 50-19 Huddersfield

Westerman works wonders for Hull

Joe Westerman scored two tries as Hull moved up to third in the Super League table with a convincing 30-14 win over Wakefield at the KCOM Stadium.

Westerman crossed twice in the second half and there were also tries before the break from Albert Kelly and Connor Wynne.

With Marc Sneyd converting all four tries and also kicking three penalties Hull had more than enough for their opponents.

Wakefield's Max Jowitt scored a try in each half and there was also a touchdown for Justin Horo but with only one conversion from Ryan Hampshire the visitors slipped two points behind their opponents in the table.

Wakefield had beaten Hull 32-12 at the KCOM last month but without influential playmaker Danny Brough this time around they were second best.

There was no stopping Kelly as he raced through a gap before scoring with just four minutes gone, with Sneyd kicking the extras.

Leeds edge tight affair

Two tries from Ash Handley helped Leeds defeat Hull KR at Headingley, holding off a fightback from the visitors to win 28-24 and move up to 10th in the Betfred Super League.

The Rhinos leapfrogged the Robins on the ladder by handing Tim Sheens' struggling men their sixth loss in seven matches.

Behind 22-0 at half-time, Hull KR fought back bravely but could not complete a miracle come-from-behind win.

Leaders Saints in fine form

Matty Costello scored a second half hat-trick as nine-try St Helens thrashed Catalans Dragons 50-14 to protect their four-point lead over Warrington at the top of the Betfred Super League table.

Centre Costello crossed three times in 21 minutes, with six other players joining in the rout of Steve McNamara's Challenge Cup holders.

Dragons, who ended St Helens' 100 per cent start to the season at Stade Gilbert Brutus with an 18-10 win on April 6, led 6-0 early on but did not threaten to complete an unlikely double over Justin Holbrook's seasoned trailblazers.

Since that defeat Saints have won four games in a row, including Wire and derby rivals Wigan, scoring 186 points, 112 in wins over Hull FC and now the Perpignan outfit.

Austin helps Wolves cruise home

Blake Austin claimed two tries as Warrington produced a dominant second-half display to claim a comfortable 50-19 Betfred Super League victory over Huddersfield.

A purple patch of three tries in seven minutes at the end of the first half helped Huddersfield to a surprise 19-12 half-time lead at the Halliwell Jones stadium.

But the Wolves responded in style after the break as they ran in 38 unanswered points in a dominant display to run out easy winners.

Bryson Goodwin also claimed two second-half tries for Warrington with others coming from Ben Currie, Daryl Clark, Ben Murdoch-Masila and Chris Hill with Stefan Ratchford kicking nine goals.

Huddersfield claimed tries through Louis Senior, Darnell McIntosh and Alex Mellor while Oliver Russell landed three goals and a drop goal.
