Tonga (12/1 with Sky Bet to win the World Cup) impressed as they blew Scotland away in the first half on their way to a 50-4 victory.
Powerful forwards Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita were among the big-names in the Tonga line-up and they played their part as the Pacific heavyweights flexed their muscles.
Michael Jennings scored a hat-trick while Taumalolo, Sika Manu, Daniel Tupou and Peni Terepo also crossed for tries in a one-sided first period.
Scotland, who came into the tournament ranked fourth in the world after an impressive 2016 Four Nations, regained some lost pride after the break.
Danny Addy went over for Scotland's first try of the World Cup but Tupou and Ata Hingano both crossed late on as Tonga finished strongly.

Ireland defied sweltering heat in Cairns to get their World Cup campaign off to a stunning start with a 36-12 victory over Italy.
Winger Liam Kay scored two of the Wolfhounds' six tries and skipper Liam Finn kicked six goals from seven attempts in an impressive victory that sets up the possibility of a quarter-final clash with England.
George King, Kyle Amor, Michael Morgan and Louie McCarthy- Scarsbrook also scored tries for Ireland.
France 18-29 Lebanon
France tries: Ader (16, 53), Cardace (67)

Lebanon tries: Layoun (8), Robinson (40, 80), Doueihi (63), Moses (76)
Conversions: Moses (8, 40, 63, 76)
Drop goal: Moses (74)
Lebanon warmed up for their World Cup clash against England with a history-making 29-18 win over France in Canberra.
France twice battled back to draw level but Parramatta half-back Mitchell Moses edged Lebanon back in front with a 75th-minute drop goal before clinching their first World Cup win and a likely quarter-final spot with a solo try.
Lebanon, coached by former Kangaroo international Brad Fittler, suffered a blow before kick-off when forward Chris Saab pulled out of the game after being concussed in the warm-up but they took an early lead through full-back Anthony Layoun and were never behind.
France demonstrated their resolve to stay in contention thanks to two tries from Bastien Ader and one from Damien Cardace, plus three goals from William Barthau.
However, the Cedars produced a storming finish with winger Travis Robinson applying the finishing touches with his second try, and France will now need to beat either Australia at Canberra Stadium on Friday or England in Perth on November 12 to keep alive their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
