Champion jockey Oisin Murphy talks Ed Chamberlin through the nuances of riding in the Investec Derby, and draws comparisons between this year's challenger Kameko and 2018 third Roaring Lion.
Murphy has yet to win Flat racing's most prestigious prize but has experience of the big race including a fine third on Roaring Lion when chasing home Masar in 2018.
The jockey explains exactly what is going through the mind of a rider at various points around the world famous course, and suggests this year's edition behind closed doors may in fact be a help to some of the less experienced horses in the line-up.
He details the main similarities and differences between big 2020 hope, the 2000 Guineas hero Kameko, and Roaring Lion, who was by the same sire in Kitten's Joy and just didn't quite see out the 12-furlong trip after giving Murphy a brilliant spin around Tattenham Corner two years ago.
"The closest I've come is finishing third but hopefully Kameko can go a couple of places better," he says.
"For me, I'll be hoping I'm following the right horses and they go a genuine gallop. That helps spread them out a little bit and everyone has their chance.
"You're running downhill from the seven-furlong pole and then it's very undulating in the straight. Tattenham Corner won't be an issue for Kameko, or the favourite English King for that matter, as they're very well balanced horses.
"Roaring Lion came round Tattenham Corner like a ballerina. He had a bit more size and scope than Kameko but he definitely didn't have the same speed at the same stage in his three-year-old career."
