Darlo Pride has been in excellent order of late and his runner-up effort on Sunday means he has either won or finished second on his last seven starts.

The thriving Darlo Pride failed to complete a hat-trick on Sunday but he may have gone close had he got a run when it was needed.

He had to wait for the gap to open under two furlongs out and, despite sticking on well when in the clear, was unable to reel back one who secured first run. This performance, under a penalty for last week's win, was arguably his best effort yet and he can continue giving a good account.

Flying Fletcher shaped better than the result when fifth on his handicap debut at Newcastle and looks to be on a fair mark.

He raced well off the pace but made good headway over two furlongs out and briefly threatened to come all the way through.

His effort flattened out - he perhaps needed the run on his return from nine weeks off or possibly just paid the price for a big forward move - but he showed enough to suggest he's one to be interested in next time.

This was a well-run handicap and three of the quartet who fought out a tight finish came from mid-division or further back. The exception was Crownthorpe, who did well against the pace bias in finishing a close-up fourth, showing more than enough to suggest he can add to his tally in the coming weeks.

Crownthorpe won three times on the all-weather earlier this year before missing the summer and returning from six months off with a below-par effort at Newcastle a few weeks ago. This was much more like it with the run under his belt, though, moving to the front inside the final two furlongs and soon building up a lead of around two lengths before he was clawed back in the final 50 yards.

Crownthorpe sustained his effort really well under the circumstances – the pair he raced clear with both weakened to finish out of the frame – and he looks set for another productive winter on the all-weather if building on this run.

Al Marmar failed to beat a rival on his first start for Stuart Williams at Newmarket last month (was previously with Andrew Balding) but he took a big step forward and produced a more encouraging effort at Chelmsford on Thursday.

Al Marmar was short of room inside the final furlong when making headway, but he kept on well close home and was nearest at the finish, beaten little more than two lengths in fifth.

He has slipped a long way in the weights – he's 8 lb below his last winning mark – and is one to note after taking a step back in the right direction here. A return to a mile is also likely to be in his favour.

Kamboo confirmed debut promise as he made most of the running to get off the mark at the second attempt in this novice event, while the runner-up, Sardinian Warrior, was a big eyecatcher from the opposite end of the field.

Sardinian Warrior looked in need of the experience in the early stages, running green well off the pace after missing the break. There was plenty to like about the way he finished his race once the penny dropped, though, still having plenty to do entering the final furlong but ultimately passing the post only three lengths behind the winner having stayed on strongly under a hands-and-heels ride.

By Saxon Warrior and out of the Phoenix Stakes winner La Collina, Sardinian Warrior is bred to be smart and he's very much one to look out for with this experience under his belt, with the large 'P' attached to his Timeform rating denoting that he's open to significant improvement.

Romilda had no luck in running when an eye-catching fourth at Wolverhampton last month and it was a similar story at Lingfield on Tuesday when she was again held up in traffic on her way to finishing third.

Romilda, who missed the break and was held up off the steady gallop, needed to wait for a gap over two furlongs out and then had to pick her way through rivals inside the final furlong.

She ran on strongly, though, leaving the impression that she's on a handy mark that she can take advantage of when things develop more favourably.

Heatherdown Hero has slipped 11 lb in the weights since joining this yard at the start of the year but he shaped as if back in form when catching the eye at Wolverhampton on Monday.

Heatherdown Hero was unable to challenge the front pair, but he ran on well into third in the straight after travelling powerfully but finding himself short of room on the turn for home.

The Rebecca Menzies yard is in superb form at present and Heatherdown Hero, who is 9 lb below his last winning mark, is one to be interested in following this encouraging effort.
