Our Hong Kong expert Graham Cunningham marks your card for Wednesday's Happy Valley card, live on Sky Sports Racing.
Two stalwarts of the Hong Kong scene stole the show at Sha Tin on Saturday.
Ricky Yiu – famed for his handling of superstars like Sacred Kingdom and Fairy King Prawn – snagged a treble to become only the fifth trainer to break through the 1,000 barrier in HK.
And popular homegrown rider Keith Yeung sealed a double aboard File fancy Awesome Treasure to advance to 300 HK wins.
Yiu is no stranger to international success and is looking forward to a return trip to Japan on June 2nd when stable star Voyage Bubble joins fellow HK star Romantic Warrior in the Yasuda Kinen.
Yeung has kept smiling through “lots of ups and downs, falls, injuries, good rides, bad rides” and the 36-year-old has four more chances to shine on a Happy Valley Wednesday card that features several notable handicaps.
The Loire Handicap (12.40) is the first of them and NOBLE PURSUIT looks the best bet on the card as he bids for his fourth win of the season.
Caspar Fownes’s gelding was impressive over course and distance in February and has caught the eye twice since, including when chasing home old rival Flamingo Trillion three weeks ago.
Noble Pursuit came home powerfully that night after being stopped in his run briefly swinging for home. A 5lb pull with the winner tips the scales in his favour and, with Hugh Bowman in the irons, this progressive youngster looks to have a great deal going for him.
Fownes and Bowman look the pair to follow again in the Sauternes Cup (1.40) when GLORY CLOUD bids to break his HK duck at the sixth attempt.
Early pace isn’t this gelding’s forte but he’s learning nicely on the job and came home strongly to chase home the bang-in-form Our Lucky Glory at the Valley last month.
A 1lb rise for that improved effort looks very fair and the presence of several aggressive front runners – headed by the fiery Super Axiom – will provide the sort of testing pace that should suit Glory Cloud ideally.
Zac Purton is a key player in Wednesday’s final two spotlight races, first aboard Fortune Warrior in the Rhine Handicap (2.10) and then on the upwardly mobile Copartner Prance in the finale at 3.50.
The freewheeling FORTUNE WARRIOR ran a belter from gate 12 when caught close home by Sergeant Pepper recently. Pierre Ng’s gelding has drawn the outside alley again – which may force Purton to ride a more patient race - but a clear run should make him a key player.
Francis Lui keeps chipping away at Ng’s longstanding lead in the race to be champion trainer – the gap is down to four – and COPARTNER PRANCE will be a warm order as he bids to complete a four-timer in the concluding Seine Handicap.
His latest emphatic success suggests that a 9lb hike might still leave him on a good mark but NEVER TOO SOON came home strongly after being forced to wait for a run that night and an 8lb pull makes him well worth considering as a saver and Quinella candidate.
