Report
Cardsharp put up a game performance to make all the running in the Brian Yeardley Continental Two Year Old Trophy Conditions Stakes at Beverley.
Mark Johnston's youngster showed he had thrived since finishing runner-up to De Bruyne Horse in the Woodcote at Epsom just eight days earlier, keeping all challengers at bay over the stiff five furlongs at the East Yorkshire track.
Accompanied by Chatburn through the early stages, the 6/4 favourite pulled out plenty for Joe Fanning to get home by two and a quarter lengths from his stablemate Rufus King. The James Given-trained Cold Spirit shaped well on his debut to take third place.
Reaction
The winning trainer's wife and assistant, Deirdre Johnston, said: "He's a big, lovely horse and that was fantastic.
"He took a lot of pulling up and Joe said five (furlongs) or six would be fine.
"After that, he'll probably be entered in the Norfolk, Windsor Castle and Coventry and we'll see which race is the most suitable for him."
She added: "We didn't know about the ground, but he seemed fine on it.
"The second horse probably wants another furlong and we'll discuss with the owner about Royal Ascot."
