Grace Reid pips Alicia Blagg to diving gold at European Championships

Grace Reid added a European gold medal to her growing collection after pipping Great Britain team-mate Alicia Blagg to win the women's three-metre springboard event in Edinburgh.

The Scottish diver, who won 1m springboard gold at the Commonwealth Games in April, came from behind with a brilliant final dive at the pool in which she trained during her junior career.

Reid entered the fifth and final round in bronze medal position but scored 73.50 which proved enough to lift her above Blagg by less than two points, with Germany's Tina Punzel taking bronze.

Reid said: "It has been hard work this season with ups and downs. It is great to solidify the hard work."

Reid, who also won silver in the 3m synchro event, added: "If you had said to me at the start of the campaign that I would be walking away with the gold medal, I would probably have laughed a little."

Emotional Blagg, who underwent wrist surgery which temporarily put her future in the Great Britain programme in doubt, had no complaints at being edged for gold by her team-mate.

"I didn't think this (silver) was possible," said Blagg. "I didn't think I would walk away with a medal. A lot of times this season, I have just been fighting back."

Earlier, Lois Toulson and Matthew Lee teamed up to take silver in the mixed 10m synchro behind Nikita Shleikher and Iuliia Timoshinina of Russia.
